Not that I need to justify a new helmet… the Smith helmet is probably 10 years old, and probably been used for 300+ days. It was beginning to wear in places, look tatty and I wanted to replace it. I tried on a bunch of helmets but Smith ones aren’t too common around these parts. The new Poc one is so much more comfortable.

Rab Kinetic jacket, really lightweight so hopefully ideal for warm EoSB days. Grabbed some different layering options too.
Scott E1 backpack, because I like fancy things and thought it would be easier to fly with than the old ABS I have.
Also won a Fall Line competition for some Nordica Multigara skis but they've not turned up yet
Oh and at the end of last season I got some I/O Mag XL goggles

A very sparse year for new purchases this year.
New pair of Giro goggles that integrate perfectly with my Giro helmet. Literally no fogging, despite me wearing glasses too.
Cheap Decathlon liner gloves to replace the ones I lost somewhere.

What have I bought for this season? Hm...that's a tough one.
AA battery for my transceiver
Roughly half of the European ibuprofen mountain.
I bought a new pair of Salomon qst98 c/w marker squire bindings end of last season for this year...does that count?
For next year I am considering CARV but might just get lessons instead.

Bought some new shell pants as the old ones split. I had them repaired but they only arrived back 3 days before another trip and the new ones had arrived by then and they are so pretty....
Nothing else. Though I do want some new skis and will be checking the end of season sales for those...

I forgot a new back protector from this list. Something that would have been really handy to have been wearing in the previously mentioned heavy fall 2 weeks ago. In reality, it was in my apartment and not on my back, and i'm paying for the consequences now.

@swskier, I hardly ever ski on my own. Nowadays I am generally the team leader though so skiing at my own pace mostly. Surely it would work better to ski on an empty piste (rare these days) rather than alone?
I have followed the CARV thread on here with interest, I may not get the best out of it but yes, combined with a good lesson it must surely help with improving?

@gixxerniknik, what others might find annoying is, if you're trying to get as good a result as possible, you'll start and stop quite a lot, skiing 8-15 turns to maximise your score.
That said, I like it, it adds a bit of fun beyond the normal levels of skiing fun.

@Chico, Same here. I bought some insoles for 8 euros from Decathlon to replace those in my boots as they were worn out after 25+ years of skiing.
I've thought about buying other stuff but was more oriented to rebuilding my road bike this spring with lower gears.

So far "only" replacing my WD R108CL 186cm with Beast 14 (snapped a tip off) with Nordica Enforcer 99 179cm with Shifts.
First time I've managed to snap a ski. In fairness the carbonlight construction had probably had too many high speed piste miles.
Given I also have lightweight touring skis, powder skis and slalom skis thought I'd go a bit more 50/50 with every day skis. Happy with the enforcers - way better that the whitedots on piste but a bit harder work off piste.
May buy a pair of light(er) touring boots next week as I've decided my fischer transalps are too rubbish downhill.

New jacket for private skiing and alpine soles for the boots I bought last year.
Have a feeling next season will be more expensive, probably a new helmet, maybe goggles/glasses (prescription), maybe gloves (my usual pair are still in good condition but are about 3 years old now so +/- 250 days) and probably a pair of skis.

A modest entry from me. Some baselayer tops by Craft and Rab, really pleased with the choice …. warm, breathable, not baggy. For many years I only bought Icebreaker, but their price hikes to silly money brought that to an end.
I also bought ski gloves recommended in the Telegraph, but even the XXL size were too tight, so they were returned. In the autumn I’ll look to buy Hestra gloves.

I'm in the hunt for some new ski goggles next season, does anyone know when the end of season sales typically start online? And which sites are best? Thanks. |
Now is definitely a good time. Absolute Snow can be good.
I highly recommend Oakley Prizm, Smith Chromapop/Chromapop Photochromic, Julbo Reactiv 0-4 High contrast.
Personally, I have been rocking Smith Squad XL with Chromapop everyday and storm lenses for the last two seasons they are fantastic. I have heard very good things about the new Smith Chromapop Photochromic lenses which I might get in Sunglasses form for touring next year. |
Hi. I’ve never tried Oakley Prizm or Smth Chromapop. If you had to recommend one, which would it be? I’m thinking in terms of low light piste skiing.

Previously, id have said the Smith chromapop were marginally better based on the comparison with either Oakley hi-pink or persimmon lenses, however, this season I've moved onto oakleys again with the new iced iridium lens and I think i prefer those.
Honestly not much between them.
Both have been top-end goggles - the smith's were the 4d mag with the curved "bird's eye" lenses, the oakleys were the new Line miner Pro .
I prefer the feel of the oakley goggles on the face, I find the Smith foam a little scratchy .

Yeah also like these. Proper big goggles with 2 premium lenses often available at decent end of season discounts as Smith seem to like tinkering with strap and frame colours for no real reason. Bit of a PITA to change lenses so I solved that by buying 2 pairs. Everyday will still serve duty when it greys out and Storm Rose is actually pretty decent in all but bluebird days.

Like most people (I think?), I focus on replacing worn/irreparable items each season. However, I went all out this year to replace kit as I have lost 13kg weight, my kit was well used over the last 10-20 years and my teenage daughter has inherited my old Head Total Joy skis:
Helmet (Sweet Protection)
Skis (Stockli Nela 8
Boots (Salomon Supra)
Goggles (Oakley Line Miner Pro - yes the iridium lenses are fantastic!)
Shell jacket (Outdoor Research)
Salopettes and jacket (insulated)

Pair of Head Formula 130 MV's from profeet which I'm delighted with after a refit. Pair of Komperdell team carbon SL poles, bit flexible for my liking but I will only use them for bashing gates so the weight is probably more of a factor. 2 pairs of 157 dynastar FIS SL skis, ripped the edge out of 1 on second run cartwheeling it down matson, looked like I had a fish hook attached to the end of my ski, repair is holding up. Salomon SL helmet with EPS4D system after trying on pretty much every SL helmet on the market. Im 58/59 and very oval so always on the borderline between medium and large. Most brands I need to have large but I already had a Salomon husk prime in a medium so I tried their SL in a medium and it is by far the best fitting and low profile helmet I have found.

I have something similar in a mitten version. I think it was called the expedition mitt, but may have been re-branded now. Wore them once in Hintertux early December, hands were so hot they were sweating, and I've never worn them since.

To call oneself a legend is a good gambit and I applaud ones gumption, misplaced as it is in this case. So ruling out all of Britains plight and sun total of that cow towing to all that’s gone by with the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow being deconstructed as realised as left right and centre absurdities and much worse. Rainbow and open borders legend ?
Ahem, excuse me. Why do you call yourself legend?

Nothing for me personally this season although I was tempted with some new skis due to an edge issue with my XT800s but having skiied on them for a week without issue I figured I'd hang on to my cash.
Collectivly "we" bought a Dakine roller ski bag which is a treat to my legs lugging stuff around the airport.
But my god things have jumped up in price...

Mrs ST brought me a new pair of boots for Christmas, Atomic Hawk Magna 130 with a boot fit from Glide and Slide, Otley. have to go back for a refit after using them.
While in Hochsolden at the beginning of March, I purchased;
Myself, Atomic G8 skis and bindings, poles and ski bag
Mrs ST (next seasons) Atomic C9 skis and bindings, poles, a ski bag and a pair of Leki mits.
Its been a long time since we had our own skis.
Got home, and ordered myself an Atomic ski Jacket and trousers (Redster 2L) off Sports Pursuit. Both for less then the retail price of the jacket
Purchased two new helmets and Mrs ST a pair of ski boots in March last season.
