Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Moutiers to Meribel Taxi

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Good Morning All -

Does anyone have any experience of rocking up at Moutiers on the train and jumping in an ad-hoc taxi or do they generally need to be booked?

My flight into GVA may mean I miss a pre-booked transfer that won't wait for me. I'm pretty laid back about making my way from GVA on the train to Moutiers, but then from Moutiers to Meribel I don't want to get caught out and stuck if I can help it.

I'm reluctant to pre-book as if I make it through passport control in good time, I'll make the transfer.

Cheers!

@george_1, services buses might be an alternative, depending on timing. I think the website is savoie.transdev.com. But similarly not sure if they fill up so need booking in advance.

Edit to add. Don't underestimate the time needed for the train: typically 3-5 hours. And some peak services, eg those arriving early evening at weekends, also get "sold out" in advance

@ecureuil, thanks - had a look at this option but last bus looks to be 1630 and I won't get into Moutiers until 1900ish.

A bit of a taxy war ongoing in Moutiers. So just be careful, some of the on line operators are upping the cost on the way. The traditional taxy drivers are, well, pricey.

@chocksaway, thanks for the heads up. Nothing spices up a journey like being involved in a violent turf war.

@terrygasson, Sunday the 23rd. So far I'm planning on racing through passport control to make my transfer. If I don't get that, I'll take a train from GVA to Moutiers, I'll get on the phone on the journey and try book a taxi with one of the local firms.

@george_1, ah, ok. yes their last bus is around 4ish, so no good for you.

will be interested to see what the taxi fare ends up if you need it, am at the early stages of looking into a trip to mottaret just before xmas, via train, and was looking at the options from moutiers, including rough taxi costs.

A few of the taxi firms online advertise prices for a taxi from around 60e, Uber booking in advance shows 59e for a normal taxi, but I'll have a ski bag so would rather rock up at Moutiers and find a taxi big enough to take me and my bag and see what happens. Best case scenario I won't be the only one making the journey and I can try find someone to split with... Happy to go solo if required.

@terrygasson, Altibus drops you at Moutiers and although they show timings on their timetables (and include in their ticket price) the onward journeys are on local service buses
Timetables are here ... https://api.snowcarbon.co.uk/storage/library/sc-media-3472916d496f3edeba807986f8719b92-moutiers-meribel-mottaret-winter-2024-25-bus-timetable-in-french.pdf

@geoffers, cheers, there are a few weird timings on the schedule, mostly 25mins from moutiers to les allues then another 5mins each to further outlying villages until getting to meribel.

but some buses seem to take 25mins from les allues to meribel village, so am assuming there is some kind of driver break. and on a couple of other services, the bus takes over two hours to go from moutiers to les allues, must go via albertville Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

@geoffers, cheers for the link to the timetable. V helpful, though Dimanche service stops before I arrive so I'm at the mercy of a taxi.

@terrygasson, @george_1, Altibus do seem like a very slick outfit.

I had the local morning connection from Brides les Bains to Moutiers last week which still hadn't showed 20 mins after scheduled time. Obvs. getting a bit worried so called Alti . who checked with the service company who confirmed via GPS that the bus was just entering the village.

I think that Alti. do leave a reasonable time gap between departures to allow for delays like this, and they also know who's coming from where on the passenger manifest so won't b**gger off without you

They also allow you to reschedule your return bus (up to 48hrs before departure) should you need to return home early

Have got a taxi from Moutiers up to various parts of Meribel in last couple of seasons, will be somewhere in the ballpark of E70-85 depending on where you're going.

@bobalexander1983, cheers - appreciate that info. A third option is that there's a Bens Bus from GVA to Meribel. If there's space on the day and I need it, I might be able to jump on that

Yeah, we've consistently used Ben's bus with no issues, usually taxi from Moutiers has been when we're staying in a hotel down there to tack a day onto one end of the holiday and have got the ben's bus to Moutiers rather than right up to resort.

Be aware that Ben's bus are not allowed to take in person reservations at their booth at GVA airport (I'm assuming none of the transfer companies are) for whatever reason.

@bobalexander1983, just checked with GVA - they take it off sale at 12:00 on the day of. The timings here are killing me. I'm tempted to book Ben's Bus as a just incase because it's easier - but that'll be £50 down the pan if I make my transfer!

@george_1, perhaps disclose how tight your schedule is at GVA, as others may be able to advise how likely it is to succeed/fail? If your flight has a delayed departure, can you book something before take off?

@ecureuil, I depart LBA at 1100, arrive GVA at 1410 - transfer departs GVA 1500. Most people I've spoken to say to expect an hour from getting off the plane to having bags in hand and leaving the airport. On a good day I might make it, on a bad day I definitely won't!

The baggage at GVA can be a bit of a nightmare especially if you're taking skis/board as they all go to one baggage carousel down the far end which is an absolute bun fight.

As you say it's definitely doable if all goes well but cutting it tight.

@bobalexander1983, that's exactly my issue. I'd rather it was just a total no-hope and I could justify £50 on bens bus. At the moment... I'm struggling to want to spend the money when I might not need it!

If you get stuck and miss your transfer go to Moutiers by train then just get a taxi to Les Allues. The free Meribel shuttle runs until about midnight, line A goes from Les Allues to Chaudanne (the main part of the resort) and then other lines go from there to Mottaret etc. Perhaps a bit of a faff with skis but if you want to save money? We are out there for several weeks each winter and use the free bus lots.

I think I’d have to book the bus as a back up. Taxi will cost a lot more and worse you could be high and dry. So look upon the £50 as insurance!

Hey George,

We touched down at 11am today and were at the bens bus desk by 11:50 having collected hold luggage and skis from different carousels and a quick pee stop.

Good luck!

@bobalexander1983, Cheers for the heads up - I was out in the nick of time and made my transfer - made easier by Jet2 coming into T2 which was completely deserted. Friends coming through T1 on an earlier flight were later out than me!
