If I’m visiting a large resort I’ve never been before, I’ve been known to pay for a short private instruction just to be shown the mountain and get some local knowledge of when to ski where.
|
That’s a great tip—you’re a pro! I’ll definitely do that.
We’ll be spending time at these four resorts:
• March 19-24 → Grindelwald (4 days of skiing)
• March 24-31 → Ischgl (6 days of skiing)
• March 31 - April 4 → Saas Fee (3 days of skiing)
• April 4-13 → Val Claret (Tignes) (9 days of skiing)
⸻
Grindelwald is expecting fresh snow over the next 2-3 days, so hopefully, the pistes won’t get too slushy between the 19th and 24th.
For Ischgl and Tignes, I’ve heard that most pistes are above 2000m and many are north-facing. Though, I don’t fully understand why north-facing slopes are better in spring—would love to know more about that.
As for Saas-Fee, a few people have mentioned there might be a good snow dump in the last week of March. Hopefully, their predictions are accurate.
I think this season will be a great learning experience for me!

Reality is, it’s only “great” for about an hour or two for any given segment of the piste.
|
This sounds a bit depressing at the moment, hopefully we get some miracle.

The trick is to string together different piste with different aspect within the resort that softens at different time of the day.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

As a rule of thumb, you want to start on an east facing part of the mountain, move with the sun to the south, then west. If you can’t find a run in the right condition, go for some coffee, or lunch.

I took your sage wisdom, fed it to the AI overlord, and… well, here’s what ChatGPT, my new ski instructor, spat out.
Skiing itinerary, down to the lifts, pistes, and even coffee breaks. I mean, I was hoping for “just ski where it’s good,” but nope, I got a full-on ski professor dissertation.
Now, I just hope I’m not betting my life on a machine because if AI is wrong, and I find myself skiing down an unexpected black run, I’ll be looking for the nearest emergency hot chocolate stop. ️

Final Notes
Follow the Sun → Start East, Move South, Finish West.
Avoid lower-altitude slush → Stick to Eigergletscher, Kleine Scheidegg, and Männlichen.
Use lifts efficiently → Avoid long gondola queues by skiing towards terminals.
Check Conditions → If it’s too warm, stay at higher altitudes.

@ankitind, There is no right or wrong here. Some people prefer skiing in January (eg me) others like April, one isnt better than the other they are just different. Same with resorts some people like one place, others like somewhere else. Just enjoy your trip, there will be good weather days and bad weather days, much better to see how things turn out rather than trying to plan it all down to the last minute.

@ankitind, from Grindelwald you can also ski Murren by taking the train down to Lauterbrunnen. I think it’s included in the same lift pass.

@abc, I will do all three
- Grindelwald-Wengen
- Grindelwald-First
- Mürren-Schilthorn
I can't wait to ride the world's steepest (& Newest) cable car, connecting Stechelberg and Mürren
One of the day I might drive from my hotel in Grindelwald and park at Lauterbrunnen or Stechelberg (depending on wherever I find space).
Hopefully, last week of March - we might not have to struggle for parking.
Otherwise - as you said, train to Lauterbrunnen. Ski the region and dinner at some Indian restaurant in evening in Interlaken.

@ankitind, yes, driving to Lauterbrunnen is probably even easier.
My visit to the Jungfrau area was more than 10 years ago. So a lot may have changed. I vaguely remember there’s mountain top restaurant at Murren that’s supposed to have great view. Make sure you pick a clear day to do that. (the week I was there were mostly snowy rather than clear days)

@abc, that's most probably Schilthorn with Piz Gloria.
On a sunny day, extraordinary views.
Black Inferno is nearby
