Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Austria - early April

 Poster: A snowHead

Saw £30 fights to Klagenfurt on 6th April so bought 3 flights for myself and 2 daughters. Me and eldest are a decent level but I'm taking a 14 year old boarder who has only had 12 hours of lessons in the UK.
I was thinking of heading over towards Zell/Kaprun and Obertauern but any suggestions welcome. Are they likely to have snow? Ideally somewhere she can have lessons for a few days. Not sure how to check on whether ski schools offer this as they have specific start finish days don't they?
I could probably babysit her as she learns on the job but it's not ideal for her or me!
Any advice welcome.
Thanks

According to Bergfex Nassfeld is open till 21st April. It has some nice beginners blues and a gondola up. Depends on what is open though. Tröpolach (the village at the bottom) is an hour and a half from Klagenfurt airport.

@beecroftboarder, given the current piste conditions and lack of snowfall this season, you should be looking at somewhere with a glacier nearby as you may well need it come April.

If you can leave it late to book accommodation then a late snowfall may work well for you, but if not I'd be looking at the Zillertal with Hintertux as insurance, or going for Kaprun, Sölden or maybe Ischgl in addition to Obertauern if you wanted a non-glacier area.

The glacier areas are also more likely to be able to offer lessons in early April, but as many resorts had planned to stay open until Easter you may find that there is general availability if the snow comes.

Thanks. I will leave accomodation late as we'll air bnb. I've booked a car for a week so I'm flexible and will keep an eye on the next couple of weeks in case of snow. I'm trying to get a short list of the most snow likely resorts. Because of the youngest, it may well be that the first couple of days will be on a small resort as she might only need a few open runs. I think the really small ones will be closed though.

Nassfeld looks interesting. Bergfex is showing about a metre of snow falling on the mountain in the next 5 days!

@beecroftboarder, Obertauren, Nassfeld or here in Ski Amade. All good bets, with snow forecasted over the next 10 days or so. Forget Zillertal, Ischgl or Solden unless you want 3-5 hour transfers.
Ski Schools will be runniing at all of the above, but yes, you may have problems getting a lone snowboarder in on a Monday. Might be better off paying for private lessons on a morning only basis.
Airbnb or Booking.com are best bets. We've just reduced our prices for remaining week of the season. (Not yours I'm afraid) I noted many others have done the same.

A slightly left field suggestion but Kronplatz is about the same sort of drive as Obertauern from Klagenfurt. No idea what conditions might be, would guess Obertauern or Nassfeld might be better, but you might fancy Südtirol which is really nice in spring.

Yeah Kronplatz would be good. They're great at keeping the pistes in shape and other stuff to do if you stay in Bruneck.

I'm still looking for Obertauern in the last week of April (knee arthroscopy today...). Conditions currently OK...but still 6 weeks away

Could only get (cancellable Avios) flights to Salzburg, so unless I want to drive to Ischgl it's almost the only choice...

Good hotel availability at both Obertauern and Ischgl, but I expect Ischgl will probably have the better snow conditions for that week? It's a 3 hour drive... should be fine...

Good chance I won't go, but it's the hope... haven't skied this winter...

@ankitind, second week August in St. Anton? You are talking about a walking/biking holiday right?
Or do you mean you are planning it in August for the second week of April? In which case you should be aware that things get really quiet in St Anton in April. They close down on 22.04 this year

@Steilhang, Though, I’ve decided to cancel my trip to St. Anton and head to Saas Fee instead, as many have warned that Lech and St. Anton will likely be too slushy.

However, during my research, I came across information about concerts in mid-April in St. Anton and Ischgl, featuring celebrity performances. Wouldn’t this mean that the area will still attract large crowds, keeping hotels and restaurants open? Curious to hear your thoughts!

I've still not booked anywhere to stay once we leave Klagenfurt on the 6th April but there looks to be snow this weekend.
I'm veering to Obertauern as I think I can get snowboard lessons for my daughter there and the snow conditions seem to have remianed pretty constant there. Still open to suggestions from anyone with local knowledge and access a long range forecast.

I think Obertauern would be a great place to learn to board. Plenty of blues and short distances to get back to the town. No long gondola rides from the valley.

I took a beginner boarder to Obertauern last mid March.
Excellent lessons and the rather mushy lower slopes were a good contrast to the boiler plate morning upper areas.
I highly recommend David.

Have booked an air BnB so Obertauern it is. They seem to have had a dump of snow over the past couple of days. I also noticed that on the weather forecast next week and temperatures don't seem to get above zero at the lower levels so I assume that will keep the slushy afternoons away?
How far ahead are forecasts reliable?
