In Japan shipping ski and your luggage in advance to your destination is quite common and prices are very reasonable. It has started picking up in the US too via lugless and the like. Prices are comparable to paying airlines for ski carrage. How come there aren't any options to ship skis from the UK to Europe? I did find some but those prices are extortionate. Provided prices are reasonable (e.g. comparable to ski carriage for flight) I'd much rather ship my skis in advance than dragging them to and from the airport with me. Surely there could be a market for this??

Prob because of the import tax. When we get even just a small package from the UK, it costs a fortune in import tax.
I suspect proving that your then going to "export" them back to the UK again, will incur some cost, and proof etc.

On the import tax bit, a staff member on a tv show yesterday said she ended up paying (I think she said) £15 import tax on an electric toothbrush she’d left at a friends house in Milan who posted it back to her in the UK. Even with proof of ownership she had no choice but to pay it

But I'm not buying goods though. I'm merely shipping my own stuffs so there's no value created. Would I still have to pay import tax?

I tried to ship skis (4 adults pairs 2 kids pairs) from Sweden to France. Ended up 28kg and of course fairly large and cost was €178 each way. Not cheap by any means.

@euanovsky,
Within Japan and within US no borders crossed. Not so around Europe.

Yes. Temporary import of personal possessions is only tax free if you're travelling with them. Would be fine within the EU, but...

If the toothbrush story is true it certainly sounds like it.

Likely is - I had pay import duties when I left my waterproof at my parents' house in the UK, and they posted it back to me. No doubt it was used - it was somewhat muddy!

I feel your pain. We had something similar, but for significantly more money. Turned out to be a mistaken delivery, nothing too do with us, but that arrived at customs at about the same time as a genuine delivery. Nothing we could do about it but mutter in frustration.

Isn’t there a lower limit from when the import tax kicks in? I thought all those Chinese companies were able to bypass that as the amounts were de minimus?
