 Poster: A snowHead

Hi there. Debating whether to fly to Milan (Malpense) or Vienna and drive to one of these resorts. 1st week of March. Myself & wife. 3 days skiing. Intermediate level. Dont want to drive too long (understand they both 2-3 hrs from airport). Night life not so important. Wife prefers not toooo cold. Ideally not too busy also lol. Any idea which is a better bet? Or any other better ideas from these 2 airports. TIA! Dan

 Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

@honky2, Munich would be a lot closer than Vienna for Schladming.
It's a great ski area with lots of runs between the trees.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I assume you’ve found much cheaper flights to Vienna over Munich/Salzburg?
I’ve done exactly both of those. It’s a full 3 hours from Vienna Airport to Schladming, due a late flight in we broke up the first journey with an overnight stopover in Leoben.
Both great ideas. Neither will be very cold then. Schladming is a proper town with an historic heart. Champoluc is a strung out settlement along a road. If a weekend, Schladming may be busier from other trippers, as (subject to Salzburg direction A10 roadworks?) it easy to get to from Germany and Salzburg.
I’d plump for Champoluc due to the shorter drive for such as short trip.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@Snow&skifan, yes, I wouldn't dream of schladming on a weekend after my last experience on a ...what used to be a quiet changeover day.. Saturday.

@honky2, Always fascinated with how folk come up with a choice of areas. As pointed out above Schladming would be ideal from Salzburg if not for the roadworks, Vienna is a good schlep away (further than London - Birmingham). Not convinced Champoluc is ideal as not the biggest area especially for piste skiing, nearby Cervinia likely to be better. Pila might be another and La Thuile is possible with a link to France. I never think Munich is an ideal airport for a short trip as all the decent areas are a good drive away but if you do go there look at the Zillertal area (Mayrhofen etc). Zürich is often overlooked but it is a better airport than Geneva and lots of places in easy reach Klosters / Davos, Arosa, Flims / Laax etc.

Due to flight costs for those in the UK, which you’re spared from?
We adored Rohrmoos-Untertal. Vienna flight costs were a tiny fraction of the weekend rip off to Salzburg or Innsbruck, especially for a family of 4 with hold luggage. We saved over £1k a holiday per holiday using Vienna or Klagenfurt.
Brits by the 10,000’s make longer transfers in time to get to their beloved VDI/Tignes from Geneva or Lyon.

Thx for the useful replies.
@Chicko I'm not coming from the UK and have only found cheapish flights to Vienna and Milan. I researched for decent resorts within a few hours of these airports. It's a random choice but that's how I came to these 2 resorts.
@munich_irish - ive been to Cervinia, liked it alot and the fact that can go over to Zermatt but I think it gets pretty cold there.
Would ski Mon-Weds, so not over a weekend.
Been to La Thuille, prefer to try something new.
Pila vs Champaloc Vs Schladming I guess.

The A10 Roadworks have not been a problem on any week day this year. Maybe an extra 10 mins at most.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

this week is the Week with school holidays for Bayern and Baden Würt. (Fasching = Carneval).I suppose Belgium has also holidays, and a part of Holland
That means a lot of traffic, and busy slopes , lifts etc
I do not know what would be in Italy this Week, but i would avoid Austria and S.Tirol for this week.
For Germany is the most busy ski week, maybe more than New Years Day Week etc

 You know it makes sense.

Decided to go to Pila in the end. Looks good for east going intermediate skiing and meant to be relatively sunny as someone pointed out. Thx for the advice as always ! (Fyi apparently there is also a small holiday also in Italy next week, Carnival, so may be busy but what can do...)
