 Poster: A snowHead

Hi, I posted previously about resorts for Mid-April. I thought it might be a good idea to leave it last minute and 'follow the snow' but realistically how late would i have to wait?
We had a great time in Les Arcs in February but this time we maybe fancy Austria (my wife is still traumatised by the 14hr bus journey we had due to the land slide on RN90 and also hates Geneva airport).
I see good deals for Mayrhofen/St Anton and Serfaus but wonder if thats going to be touch and go.
Thanks

@Sherzy13, we have booked flights to Munich, a hire car and accommodation in Mayrhofen with Sunweb for that date.
Having the car means we can always drive to glacier if we need / want
We have done Mayrhofen successfully at that time of year before

@NickyJ, the last time you went to Mayrhofen that late, did they have enough open pistes mid April?
What about Zillertal Arena?
It is a lovely domain but I was always reluctant to return that late...

We did, but we were lucky. The week before it was raining, and it then went cold again and dumped with snow just as we arrived.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@Sherzy13, I would wait until a few days before when conditions / forecast are clearer. There will be lots of availability everywhere mid-April and a lot could happen with snow conditions across the Alps between now and then.

We have half price catered chalets in Tignes, Val d'isere, and Val Thorens that week at £699.00 pp - flights into Lyon and transfers included. All good high altitude resorts.

Yes, this has to be the right answer. Certainly pointless to be speculating in February about conditions in mid April.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

I'm off to Saas-Fee - the very definition of snowsure - on 13 April. You don't need to use Geneva airport either, Zurich is just as convenient.

@LOTA, true but Tarentaise will offer more mileage that late in the season.
Never been to Saas Fe yet, planned to do it in full winter ('Last Christmas' video clip of course)
I once made the mistake of bringing my non skiing OH to Zermatt in December and now I am forced to repeat that mistake.

 You know it makes sense.
|
@drporat, Spring is best for Saas-Fee (especially for a non-skiing OH!) Because of its situation and surrounded by 4,000m peaks, deep winter is really deep there. We went in January and it was brutal!
I've done the Tarentaise many times but really don't have any hankering to return any time soon!

@LOTA, I think you previously mentioned somewhere on SH that you've been more than once to Saas Fe in April, I am weighting it for this mid April now.
I usually go to the EOSB but it's a week too late for me this time and I am considering smth different, Austria or CH.
Saas Fe has decent hiking offers https://www.saas-fee.ch/en/winter-activities/winter-hiking, I imagine mid April they will still be available

@drporat, Yes, it has been Engelberg or Saas-Fee for me at the end of the season for a number of years now. Another trip next weekend and then again in April.
Really must go somewhere else but I likes it too much!
