Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Maps showing lifts

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Does anyone have a recommendation for an easy to use map that shows lift stations?

I’m trying to figure out proximity of some rental properties to the lifts but it’s a bit tricky translating a piste map with a google map to understand whether somewhere is walkable.

I’m sure the maps on Airbnb and the like used to have lifts shown, but they don’t seem to anymore.

Try this. It is built on top of the OpenStreetmap database.

Google have removed lifts and pistes from Google maps so any application using that as a base will no longer have lifts etc. Try https://openskimap.org/

Much like the replies above, OSM seems easiest.

I personally use OSMand on my phone, and this can show ski and non ski infrastructure, contours if desired. You can overlay footpath maps for example and many other things.

I now use this for almost all mapping (even though I have OSmaps), most outdoor routes (following and planning) etc

EDIT- having re-read the original post - easy being a requirement - perhaps the ones above might be easier to start with, although more limited

@Chico, There are lots of alternatives available. As mentioned before https://openskimap.org, based on openstreetmaps is a good choice The French IGN maps show lifts as do the Kompass maps for the Dolomites. However these are just raster representations and hard to work with. The underlying data (a bit like Mastermap for the UK) are very expensive.

Openstreetmap and I suppose the skiing data can easily be imported in a GIS - see https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/QGIS_tutorial for example. This will allow any analysis you want to be carried out. Just getting the coordinates in UTM will allow simple "as the crow flies" to be calculated between known points.

Google removing the lifts from the maps is pretty annoying.

Mapy.cz is my new favorite go to map app for this sort of thing. Also has a winter view which shows pistes. I think it probably gets its data from openstreetmap too.

If you put the Google view into satellite mode, maybe you can physically see the lifts if you are looking at street level scale?

From what you've said @Chico are you referring more to "uplift base stations" you walk/drive to to start your day rather than random chairs chairlifts up on the hill?

Assuming you are while Google Maps no longer show the lifts next to roads will normally be named locations on the map and often 'featured' ones. That and a little street view stalking and you can quickly have a very accurate location for the lift - and some more street view stalking based on exterior photos of the accomodation can usually get you a very accurate location for that too.

Google in satellite view and streetview is often the best way here, if you're looking for walking distance. OSM/OpenSkiMap is great but often in resorts the actual walking route to a piste or lift aren't marked well on maps as they use various different cut through, stair cases, walking paths etc.

Just thought I'd post a screenshot to show how much more useful using better maps can be in comparison to trying to find where lifts run on Google maps:

Obviously you can also search and mark locations and also show specific bus routes etc.

Edit- ok struggling with the image embed thing but you can always copy/paste the URL or follow the link:

Where are you looking to go.

There is usually a map showing this on the tourist information site.

Thanks everyone, these are some great resources. Now my geography geek can revel in looking at loads of cool new map layers and playing around with them, in addition to them actually being useful to helping find accommodation.

I was originally looking at Zell Am See, as it seemed like a lot of the properties I saw were a reasonable walk from the lifts. Thanks all again!

Mapy.cz (and my favourite, the LocusMap application), OpenSnowMap and OpenSkiMap all use the same source, i.e. OpenStreetMap.

But from a browser I'll start switching to Mapy.

On Google play there is an app called "relief maps" used in conjunction with openskimap it is suitable for assessing routes from experience. If you put it on world sat and 3D then it is very good for seeing elevations and distances.
