Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

French Port workers strikes

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi all, French port workers have been doing a series of intermittent strikes, causing various ferries to be cancelled. For example todays ( Thursday ) sailing Dublin to Cherbourg with Irish ferries has been cancelled, due to industrial action. We are due to sail this route in March on a Thursday. I have googled and can find all the strike dates through February, but cannot find any dates for March. Do any of you fellow Snowheads who reside in France have any further information of whether the strikes are planned to go into March. If we know in advance we could make plans to travel via the UK and either Dover ferry of Eurotunnel.

Many thanks in advance.

@Origen, yes a worry at the moment as its my 60th and my friends 70th joint ski birthday bash, 16 adults and 2 children. I have missed out on skiing for the last few years. 16 of the group are travelling a mixture of car from UK and some are flying. Myself and Mrs B are the only two travelling from Ireland, so need a plan B if our ferry is cancelled. Its a pain as myself and Mrs B have booked the accommodation for us all and we are in a luxury appt. with Sauna. I even have new skis and helmet purchased. rolling eyes rolling eyes

@Timbobaggins, could you book a cheapish, throwaway flight in case plans are scuppered? Nothing announced for March yet that I could find either, and nothing at all for Calais or Dunkerque

Cross channel services are also affected, so may well disrupt more of your group's plans.

It doesn't look as if any strike dates for March have yet been announced. They've only just announced those for next week (Wed and Thurs).

Only giving a week's notice may be a deliberate plan to add pressure.

Do you have an option of flight and car hire?
As you were intending to drive anyway, the airport of destination could be largely irrelevant and you might get a decent deal on price.

We kind of did the opposite during the ash cloud disruption. An overnight with a friend in Manchester and a return flight to Geneva ended up as a ferry crossing car ride to Val Thorens. I took a punt on a £30 ferry to Dunkerque. Apart from the traffic jam near Bourg-en-bresse, and me having to drive the rest of the way after the other passengers drank all the beer on the autoroute, it turned into a good journey. I think our flight actually took off in the end, but we'd claimed the offered refund by then.

@Timbobaggins, doing a google search for french port workers strike dates in March 2025 I got this:

"The labour unions have called for a 72-hour strike between 18-20 March along with four-hour walkouts on 4, 6, 10, 12, 14, 24, 26 and 28 March. Overtime work and one-off shifts will also be affected."

You didn't mention 18-20th March but it looks like there'll be a total walkout by the port workers over that period. The dates you gave have 4 hour walkouts, unfortunately I'm affected by those as my outward travel with DFDS is booked for a Dover-Calais ferry on 24th March. Sad

If my ferry gets cancelled as a result what rights do I have, will DFDS rebook me onto the shuttle? Puzzled

Plan B might be to see if DFDS will rebook me onto a crossing on the previous day (23rd March) and spend a day longer in France....

 You know it makes sense.

It’s supposed to be a “port mort” today but most of the X Channel ferries are running with the odd cancellation this afternoon.

@Alastair Pink, i am with Irish ferries, the Dublin to Cherbourg on Tuesday this week was cancelled due to the strike, looking at their web site, they would put us on Rosslare to Pembroke, credit us with £75 for fuel to drive to Dover to get an Irish ferry to France, assuming the Calais ports are not striking as well. We are due to sail from Dublin next Thursday 6th March and arrive Cherbourg on 7th, which is currently not a strike day

@chocksaway, think they are striking at certain ports, but blockading other ports, seems to be hit and miss as to what ports they decide to blockade

@Timbobaggins, according to The Connexion ex pat webpage, the Dover to Calais routes are going to be particularly badly affected during these dates.
