 Poster: A snowHead

Just here to tell you that mapy.cz now has a decent 3D feature, with winter mode. 2D mode also has slope shading which I guess will come to 3D soon. It is good and rapidly improving.
Winter mode will give you a decent real view of the pistes and connections for most resorts in winter mode too.

I have used the IOS app in resort, and was just looking about booking some accommodation for a trip in march so opened it on the browser and noticed the new 3d feature. Just checked the app and it isn't there yet.

Has been mentioned here before and is quite snazzy.

[Not yet] looked at Outmap, but https://openskimap.org does do 3D via two-finger slide, but doesn't do offline maps (that I am awareness of)

@Dylan_T42, I can't get 3d on open ski map for love nor money. How do you do it?

There's an app named Relief Maps that I just came across. There a free version and Pro version that includes IGN maps, aspect, slope angles, 3D, downloadable etc. It looks good. Guy in Annecy seems to be the developer. €31pa for the pro version. 7 day free trial. Look them up on Insta or FB.

I've recently discovered that the view on openskimap is directly overhead only in the middle. It's most noticeable if you put a cliff in the middle and then move the map so it moves towards the edge - the cliff becomes very obvious and you can see overhangs. I was quite enraptured looking at Lauterbrunnen the other evening.
It might also explain why I've sometimes thought a run grading/percent appeared not to tally with the contour spacing, as I was expecting it to be like in an OS map.
I don't know if there is a more extreme 3D effect to be found.

On a mobile/tablet, in Safari/Crome/Firefox, just place two fingers near the middle of the map & move them up the screen. This “pushes” the top of the map back towards a virtual horizon, then various two-fingered gestures allow rotation & pinch-to-zoom. To return to birds-eye view, just do a two fingers in the pull down the screen.
HTH ?

Yes thank you - I've not tried using it before on my phone but it does work. I wonder if there's a way of getting that effect on a Windows laptop
