Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Fritschi Snow Leashes

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Going through some ski kit boxes I found some older version Fritschi Alu bar snow leashes (when i had a set of Titanals binding on some Rossigniol bandit XXs)

These are thin webbing buckle adjustable straps with a folded over tip that went through a slot in the toe binding to prevent ski loss in deep powder, and could presumably pop out of the toe slot if under enough pressure.

Curoious at what Fritischi now do, a very similar leash is now attached very firmly to the binding and looks unreleasable https://gzhls.at/blob/ldb/7/0/2/3/69ed8507e65a12f94f4df122c2041739b667.pdf

I was under the impression that leashes on skis needed to pop under pressure, as tying loose skis to oneself whilst tumbling down a hill rather enhanced the whole cuisinart effect, but not for the better.

Does any SH who skis offpiste regularly with leashes, have any thoughts/opinons/scars re leashes and their usage, please?

Cheers!

@SBP, this is my setup with the long b&d coiled leashes, which also have a breakable link which should fail at a specific loading in case of av. etc https://www.snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=122812#2819832

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Oooh, nice.
Toying with adapting the old Fritschi leashes to take Telemark clips and then setting up small cables ties in a sleeved loop for clip ins ( from an enterprising US backcountry type https://wildsnow.com/1494/ski-leash-safety-strap/ - also looks like what your B&D set up developed from!)

Either that or buy a decathlon cheapy to tweak with 2 spare coiled leashes https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/fuse-leash-for-cross-country-skiing-bindings/_/R-p-358166

(Nooo, not impatient at all for the season to start.... Nope, nope, nope...)

I think I've still got those same leashes kicking about, that came with the Titanal bindings, but in practice I nearly always had breaks fitted anyway, so used them very rarely.

But I never realised/thought that they were supposed to break free in the event of 'enough pressure'.

We use the newer Fritschi leashes all the time now. The brakes on our Dynafit bindings are not great and, a while back, we were prompted to get some when Shona (BASS Chamonix) expressed mild horror when she saw we didn't use them.

I used the larger of the spare loops that come with the Fritschi kit to go through the Dynafit toe piece and to some strong key rings as 'fuses'. At the top of our boots is a spare hole so I looped some thin cord through and into the smaller wire loop.

I like 'em.

I think because the tab stitching was a different colour to the rest of the leashand it wasn't lock looped in/ was only held in by a tab, the assumption was that they would give under pressure?
Certainly not as precise/reliable as a purpose made "fuse"

Skiing in glaciated terrain with Andy Teasdale (IFMGA guide) he insisted that those with only brakes needed to get leashes, since loss of a ski on a glacier means you'd then be on foot.

Being without skis on on a glacier is a no-no due to potential for snow-bridge failure over crevasses - skis bridge/spread the load over slots etc

First time this was required: not had this with other guides...
