 Poster: A snowHead

Hi, We are driving down to Serre Chevalier end of this week so there for half term. We did the same last year and it was great but we left at around 10am on Saturday and went down the A1091, it took about 4 hours to get to Grenoble. It was quite clear when we set off but as everybody joins further down from Alpe d'Heuz and Le Deux Alps it just grinds to a halt. Has anybody any experience of either the A43 / A41 route or what time we would have to set off to miss most of the traffic or alternatively we do something for a few hours in Briancon area before we set off. We can't wait all day as we need to get back up to Reim's for Saturday night.

 Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

@bigsurfer, go via Frejus, but then you will hit all the Savoie traffic coming from Albertville as you join the Chambery road but will still be faster than the 1091.
You'll have the extra toll fees for the tunnel though, but could be worth it.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@bigsurfer, According to Google Maps you'd have to leave by 8h45 to avoid the traffic. In the afternoon you would meet the day tripper traffic from various resorts. Maybe around midday ?
I think you'll find it longer going via the Frejus - you may have queues at the tunnel then from Aiton to Chambery. Possibly. Even with no queues you will not be faster providing from Grenoble you go via Lyon and not Chambery.
Via Gap you won't have traffic but it will be much slower.

If we're leaving on a busy Saturday, we usually try to leave Monetier before 8, always via 1091 unless it is bad weather and closed. It will get you to Bourg D'Oisans ahead of the main traffic. Our overnight is usually in Reims area and make it comfortably with a stop for lunch, which is a quick one if we've hit traffic. Don't leave it until 10am, everyone is on the road then.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

We stayed just round the corner in Puy St Vincent many times at Feb HT. The local experts advised skiing on the Saturday until lunch, have a relaxed lunch, drive off (from memory) about 2:30 ish. Always did the trick, we missed the carnage, got a lay-in and extra skiing.
Obviously alters the location of the motel for the Saturday night.
(The Col du Lautaret to Grenoble route).

@Snow&skifan, we have too long a drive when we leave to stay until lunchtime. Need to be much farther North to get home on Sunday in decent time.

We've left Serre Che on a Saturday afternoon quite a few times and driven over the Lauteret and not usually hit much traffic.
