I don't generally drink as a matter of course when skiing. Makes me feel more tired for one thing. But having a lunchtime or afternoon beer on the deck or a Caffè correto seems very much complimentery to the experience.
Student typesshotgunning beers on chairlift at 10am is a bit more problematic. |
A great lunch, with wine and friends, on the slopes is one of the joys of skiing.
A hell-for-leather all-day blast, with no alcohol, is another one.
A day's off piste back country skiing, similarly without alcohol as where would you get it, is yet another.
I'm with @Chaletbeauroc and @gixxerniknik on this; let's not get overly pious. It's supposed to be fun and, full confession time, I definitely did some stupid things in my youth (and, being honest, my second, third and fourth youth too) involving alcohol. It ill behoves us to get all sanctimonious now. I really don't want to be overly criticising the young for doing what I suspect most of us did at their age too.

I think anyone who will have 4 pints then drive is an absolute moron |
And I think in similar terms of someone who would so blatantly misinterpret what I wrote.
To educate yourself you might like to take a look at a blood alcohol calculator, such as this one showing zero blood alcohol after five hours from two pints.

Not interested in arguing about it but he said 2 at lunch and 2 at dinner = 4. Of course some alcohol is processed but i stand by my point that this is massively irresponsible behaviour and it is drink driving (and I also believe would have you over the limit in UK and france). You aren't going to change my mind on this. Anyone that behaves like this is a danger to themselves and others. |
No, he didn't. Read what he wrote before accusing him. He said some days he had a pint and then another during the day. He said some days he went somewhere and had two pints. At no point did he state that this was on the same day ! So, you're adding 2 + 2 quite erroneously.
This quite aside from the fact that if he had two pints during the day over a 4-5 hour period that, come the evening, he would be back to near zero blood alcohol concentration anyway.
I'm not in any way a defender of drink driving and, personally, since I drive a high performance car and motorcycles I never drink any alcohol if I'm driving. However, it's very disingenuous to accuse someone of drink driving when, clearly, they didn't say anything that would infer that they did.

I think a whole lot of us are rather surprised that the figure is so low. I guess we'd have to look at the figures in rather more detail than a casual conversation and understand the modelling and figure out if it's really a representative sample etc etc.
My seat of the pants estimation is that only 6.75% having an alcoholic drink (as opposed to being drunk) seems very low indeed.

@monkey, If you ever visit the Monal hotel in Ste Foy, you will see a fair few locals drinking wine, or demi beers and then driving home.
There is no public transport or taxis, so it's just the done thing - and your chances of seeing a police car are almost zero.
Except when the Tour de France comes to town, as the police are on the lookout for drunk tourists !

Ah another Austria-bashing thread.
I'm literally 24 hours home from Ischgl...and if anything they've got more stringent with late drinking on the mountain, most of the restaurants are fully closed by 4, so the mountain is pretty empty come 4:45.
I would have a beer with my lunch...and have maybe even had a late beer at say 3:30 before fully descending.
As for Paznauner Thaya - if you want ski home via red 1 or the lower section of red 1A you need to be on the last chair to Sassgalun at 4 and down to Hollboden to get the chair back to Idalp, otherwise you're skiing THAT run home...and most folk only ever do that once and NEVER again (drag lift on the flat anyone??)
I never once saw anyone drunkly out of control...this is a myth perpetrated by the Hollier Than Thous.
I'll be back for St Patricks Week and we'll do it again.

@GreenDay, Back in the day the gendarmes would have been helping the cyclists load up with booze for the hill climbs

To be honest it's more about getting themselves into trouble than the danger posed to others. I've shepherded more than one over terrained newbie gf or mate down more challenging ( to them) piste pitches when the group were all at the bottom. Also the locals with real skills don't tend to be slugging fireball or flugel, maybe they'll burn a bowl before they go into near Candide mode.
