Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Helmet attached to hand luggage?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
My helmet fits in my Ryanair under-the-seat sized bag and I take it aboard. However, I don't go skiing with Ryanair and put the bag in the SWISS overhead locker! Very Happy Not keen on clipping a helmet to a rucksack etc.

I actually prefer the system of having to pay for a larger carry on bag to fit in the luggage bins, and think it should be strictly enforced as that way those that actually need the larger carry on are assured it will travel in theb cabin with them.

I'm intrigued about this. Did you ask the owners of the three rucksacks if they had paid for them to be in the overhead lockers? How did you identify that they were in fact stealing the space in that particular locker that you were entitled to? If I have paid for bag to go in the overhead lockers and somebody feels entitled to remove my bag because their bag is bigger I would most likely be a trifle annoyed.

Love this!

Seems like someone might be a bit too "entitled" themselves!

As you mentioned, if someone removed my bag, with helmet strapped on, from the overhead locker that I'd paid for, I'd most certainly give them an ear full! If they are too slow to get in the queue to board the flight before me, then unlucky!! Go store your pre-paid overhead locker luggage at the other end of the plane! Snooze you lose!

I have been on quite a few flights where it was indeed a combined weight of person + belongings that mattered. To the extent that you stood on a big scale with all your stuff. Each person + belongings had to come under a certain total weight. So the "big-boned" could transport less gin! And had to be careful about how much kit they brought (or rely on their skinnier comrades giving up some of their tots weight allowance). On small planes it is not that uncommon.

As you allude, this is more down to the Max Take Off Mass (MTOM) on smaller planes and also required to calculate the CoG which is more critical on smaller AC. Wide body aircraft use standard weights and have load plans etc, and the MTOM is huge. Can all be researched in the Air Ops regs at CAT.POL.MAB if anyone really wants to... snowHead

Yes. I asked politely who the bags belonged to. I had to do that a couple times before there was any acknowledgement at all. Once ownership was established, I explained politely that all bins were full but I had paid for a carry on bag. And then asked if those 3 small rucksacks should actually be underseat luggage. Initial response was "go and find somewhere else to put your bags", increasingly aggressively. It was a group of 3 middle aged middle Englanders, who became even more aggressive when I asked straight out if they had paid for a cabin bag. They did not answer that question though. I calmly explained that I was going to remove the rucksacks and place my bags in the space as it was clear to me that they had not paid for cabin baggage and unfortunately on this occasion there was not enough space for them in the overhead bin. I showed them my boarding pass and gave them the opportunity to show me theirs. That seemed to out an end to the argument, except for the huffing and puffing and under-breath swearing.

In short there was plenty of opportunity to resolve the matter amicably had they indeed paid for cabin baggage. Or indeed it could have been amicably resolved anyway, by simply admitting the situation and offering to remive their rucksacks.

@Roscoe, I rather think it is you who is "entitled". Not least as you have made a whole bunch of assumptions (all of them incorrect) which can only be based on how you think and behave yourself. I made it clear in my original post, for example, that the bags had not been paid for. By default that means that I had sought to establish that before anything else.

Anyone who had paid for cabin baggage would simply have said yes that's my bag and I have paid for cabin baggage and that would have been the end of that. It is not an unreasonable question to ask. And simple to answer.

And your are assuming that I would not own up to having stored my not paid for bag into the overhead locker. But, as I have stated previously, I don't use the overhead locker, I store my bag and helmet in the allocated space provided to me (which is included in the ticket price and therefore "Paid" for) below the seat in front of me.

My helmet is no bother to you, or Easyjet as it seems, so really not sure why you have such a problem about the whereabouts of my helmet.

@Roscoe, Weird post. Contradicting your earlier one accusing me of being "entitled". I made no comment as to what you may or may not have owned up to. Merely that you made an assumption that I had not established whether the rucksacks in question were paid for cabin baggage. As an example of the many assumptions you made with no basis, so they only place they could have come from is your own moral basis.

It is up to you what you do with your helmet. I don't think you are entitled to it in addition to the dimensions allowed for your underseat bag, it should rather fit within those dimensions. That is what you signed up for when you chose that fare on that airline. But if you want to chance it, that is entirely your decision based on your own moral compass (assuming EasyJet continue to let it slide).

After all it is free Go on u know u want to!
The real argument is with easyJet. Because they’re positing various additional options as something they aren’t: SpeedyBoarding isn’t at all ‘speedy’ if the majority of people have it, it’s just a charge they can levy and then not deliver on. Or if all it means is that you are first on the transfer bus, not the ‘plane. An extra carry-on bag charge is meaningless if it has to be stored so far away that you have to wait until everyone’s left to retrieve it. And under-seat limits are meaningless if they’re not enforced. And clearly, split boarding is often possible but easyJet won’t spend the money on the extra ground staff needed to operate it. So we all end up arguing on a forum when really, we should be feeding back to the carriers that their offerings are rubbish. Trouble is, if all their planes are full most of the time, then why should they care, even if they lose a few customers, especially if there’s little competition on the route.

TUI seem to be much more amenable and I had a helmet attached to my backpack, and if you are on a TUI holiday you can take some comfort that from the moment that they pick you up from the hotel, it is their problem to get you home ...

@LaForet, I sort of agree. "SpeedyBoarding" in particular has changed. Now it is essentially those who have paid for cabin baggage (or get it free because they have the EasyJet Plus card). So about half the plane.

The problem is that what was once a pretty good package for business - i.e. get off the plane first and space for your carry on - has been degraded. Unless you always arrive super early and are happy to stand at the front of the "Speedy" boarding queue. I think they are missing a trick and will probably revert to a smaller number having SpeedyBoarding - or maybe the silly BA system with 10 different priority groups (I hope not!).

For leisure it used to be that an UpFront seat worked well, which got you much quicker bag check in (the biggest benefit especially at Geneva) as well as SpeedyBoarding (not much value if you have hold bags to wait for anyway). We used to get those seats for ski holidays and really valued the check-in, but sadly no more.

And the rather random nature to the imposition of carry on baggage rules is an issue. Sometimes and in some places they are stupid strict, sometimes they don't seem to care and lots of massive bags are onboarded. Consistency in this would be better.

But when all is said and done it is the rudeness and entitlement of others that makes the whole experience unpleasant at times. It does not always happen, but often enough to be annoying. People shoving, trying to block access to the relevant queue etc. One guy at Edinburgh insisted, for example, that I was NOT SpeedyBoarding as I had kids with me, while shoving one of my kids out of the way to get past us. I mean seriously, where does that come from?

As an aside I have travelled on Southwest (where all this low cost stuff started) a few times. They offer a free hold bag to everyone. At almost all of their gates they have a series of numbered poles, the number corresponding to the one on your boarding pass. No need to stand in queue, just wander up to your pole at the relevant time. Seemed pretty efficient and avoided the mad scramble.

Laughing This thread has entertainment value.

I was totally going to ask this question as well.

Next musing.. do you think if you board the plane last there won’t be time to get the card reader out?? Puzzled Laughing

@v1cky24, it’s a right can of worms!

I think I’ve settled on putting the biggest helmet in the hold as it exceeds the 20cm under seat size limit (by 1cm!) and the smaller ones will go in rucksack that fits under seat.

Might ask the kids to count how many people have taken a helmet as ‘extra’ hand luggage, keep them busy for a bit. Bonus points if they spot anyone getting clonked by one strapped to a rucksack.

@Lilaclou, yes ask them to count. I reckon it will be a lot! I always see many people with helmets on rucksacks.

If you’re worried about damage put it in the middle with fluffy clothes around it. Sure it will be fine.

I’ve never seen anyone be pulled with a helmet on a rucksack. Though I accept the risk is there! I have specific reasons for not wanting to check in a case -i.e I need to be straight off at the other end and I’m using the train for transfer with my daughter. We are travelling as light as possible. Only a short trip. Then I remembered the helmets rolling eyes

Well, it’s been an interesting thread for sure! In defence of @zikomo, (not that they will want defending I’m sure), the world could use a few more people with strong morals.

Flights can be stressful for all sorts of reasons, all just need to do our best I guess.

Maybe the solution is everyone should wear their helmet. Wonder if the pilot will let me make an announcement…

As I am all for personal reflection and growth, I have taken the decision to free up some room in my boot bag to get my helmet into and not swing wildly tied to said bag.

Mainly as I'll have more hand luggage allowance travelling with my 4 kids. Twisted Evil
