Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Helmet attached to hand luggage?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Wondering what the consensus is with this?

Im feeling reluctant to pack helmets in suitcases in the hold in case of damage (not all suitcases are hard exterior), so wondered if it’s acceptable to attach to small rucksack hand luggage? I know lots do this, but we are travelling with EasyJet this time, so if anyone knows about the rules for this airline in particular I’d appreciate your thoughts.

I’ve looked at the EasyJet website but it didn’t seem to say. I’m guessing we could always wear them if they weren’t happy but I’d feel pretty daft!

I’m interested in the answer to this. Also flying easy jet - I usually pack in suitcase tbh. But not planning on a suitcase this time!

With easyJet Some people get away with clipping them on, others don’t. There’s a post on the Facebook ski club page from 30th January whereby people on the flight were charged £48 for doing that, flying from Bristol….but the poster had done this loads of times before and never been charged so you may get away with it or you may not.

Do it every time and it’s never been challenged once. Mainly BA, EasyJet and Jet2.

If they complain just wear it into the plane Happy

I do it on Easyjet, small Arva pack with boots plus a few bits and bobs in it and a helmet in a cover attached. Never had any problems.

@Mjit, makes perfect sense.

I always carry my ski jacket in my hand when I board the plane, as it’s usually too warm to wear it. I can’t imagine being told to check it in, or to put it on to avoid being charged.

I always take mine as hand luggage and have never been challenged. Probably taken about 8 easyJet flights with it, plus transatlantic flights where hand luggage rules tend to be less strict. I don't take the wee wee though, so my other hand luggage is a small bag with only stuff I'd want on the plane.

I'd think twice if I was with RyanAir or Wizz though, as it's another hidden extra they can charge you for.

I flew from Bristol last Sunday, and they were checking every bag that looked like it could be remotely too big for the size specifications.

I doubt you'd be allowed to wear a helmet. I've never seen it done.

---
I've carried helmets in the hold without trouble, although for various reasons I've switched to in the cabin.

In Air Canada and BA you are now allowed two items in the cabin. I carry a big wheely "cabin bag", and then take the helmet and goggles as the "personal item". You can google the weights/ dimensions allowed, it's not a problem. Security do not blink, UK, EU, Canada, EEA.

EJ/ RyanAir... I have to pay money for the roll-on cabin bag, but that leaves the other bag for helmet etc as above.

I very much keep to the airline's published regulations / sizes/ weights and never have a problem, which is what I'd expect.

Will the rucksack and helmet fit in the airline sizer ? If so you should be ok

If not you are liable to pay the extra large hand luggage fee (unless you have already done so)

I know at Edinburgh last season on our bi weekly commute to GVA it was a frequent occurrence to see a staff member wheel out the sizer and card machine along the queue rolling eyes

A polite request to people who hang helmets off backpacks. Please be aware of your surroundings when boarding the aircraft.
When standing in the aisle and you turn round to speak to your friend that helmet usually swings and quite often comes in contact with the person seated in the aisle.
Maybe a reason for all passengers to wear ski helmets.

We flew with TUI at Christmas, no issues with mine clipped to my ru slack or my son carrying his (along with his rucksac) in a carry bag.

We do put my wife’s and daughter’s helmets in the hold pack, surrounded by socks and other soft stuff, no issues, although I was mindful to do this in a deep bag where we could pad all sides of the helmet without it being in direct contact with the exterior of the suitcase

Only time I’ve had an issue with a helmet was cycling, flying back from Spain with Ryanair - they demanded I put my helmet in my hold bag, even though other people were carrying theirs. Think I’d just caught the lady at the counter on a bad day

I put mine in the bottom of my pack and fill it with other stuff, so it doesn't take up much space. If clipped to the outside it would whack somebody.

Can I make a plea? If you do carry your ski helmet just attached loosely to your rucksack, then please be careful walking through the airplane: last outbound flight I saw someone hit almost every alternate aisle passenger as they swung their way to their seat.
snow conditions

I've carried mine on-board before as mine was the only hard-shell cabin case, and helmets don't fit due to the packing area being narrower (using each side) rather than the wider soft body ones that have one main compartment. Absolutely no issues at all, using both EJ and BA.

You can usually take an underseat bag on board for no extra charge, would a member of your party who travels without hand luggage have that as their hand luggage? As other times I've packed 2 helmets per rucksack and those have been my husband and eldests hand luggage as they never take hand luggage, only a cabin case. In fact, the lady at the gate tried to stop me as we boarded our flight to Turin, pointing out that I wasn't allowed to board with three bags. It was because I had the helmet rucksack attached to my case and my usual backpack on my back. I pointed out my son who was only wheeling a case and told her it was his bag, but it fit better on my case, so I was carrying it. As we were within our family allowance (I would have just handed him the bag if she'd persisted), she let us through.

Alternatively, if every person has a rucksack (and Easyjet allow one per person), would the helmet fit inside with the petsons flight stuff on top. As they allow for underseat bags, the dimensions are pretty generous, so you could get a slightly larger bag for each member of the party, pop the helmet in first, and put everything else in on top.

We have one of these that works well for either two helmets or one helmet plus plane supplies.

Our other one is an underseat cabin approved one from Amazon.

Where are you mean to put it though? If you haven’t got a suitcase? Are you suggesting to buy a suitcase just to put your helmet in? I don’t need a suitcase worth of luggage for a trip I have coming up. I would like to take my helmet though.

I think strictly speaking they are entitled to charge if it doesn’t comply.. there are many blind eyes turned on this point though. I always see many helmets on rucksacks.

This time I’m going to do it - I’ll probably get charged Eh oh!

If only I was allowed to carry a pair of scissors on to the plane. I'd have a great time slicing through the helmet straps of those who don't take their rucksack off before boarding.

@v1cky24, Hang on. Boarding/skiing requires an inordinate amount of kit period. To cover varying weather conditions etc.etc. How can you travel on a ski/boarding trip without some sort of bag/case whatever you want to call it? Do you wear your ski/boarding boots on the plane?

If the helmet is well stuffed with clothing, it actually takes up very little space in one's bag. It's also better protected in the bag than swinging around on a rucksack.

@Lilaclou,

The rules for cabin bags are clearly stated on EJ's website:

https://www.easyjet.com/en/help/baggage/cabin-bags

If you are going to hang your helmet off a bag, it would still need to fit within the stated dimensions, which would probably be tricky. Otherwise, they would be within their rights to charge you extra.

I always pack my helmet inside the small rucksack I use as a cabin bag (and fill it with goggles and gloves), and it fits fine.

I wouldn't hang a helmet with expanded polystyrene construction off the pack even if I could, as it would be prone to damage from being swung/bashed around (which is the whole point of not sticking it in the hold bag).

@CathS, I don't think many helmets would fit into a cabin bag. Not sure I've seen one made from polystyrene either Very Happy

@Mollerski, I'm not so sure. If I leave out my boots and off piste kit from my hold bag and go to a hotel I really don't need that much kit at all. I mean how much does one need for a week of motorway skiing? I could probably get it all into a carry on bag. I'd still put the helmet in the bag though rather than risk bashing someone with it.

@MorningGory,

I meant whatever that hard expanded foam stuff is.

My Salomon helmet has that as the interior construction.

And fits (just) within EJ's stated dimensions.

@MorningGory,

Being pedantic now. It is expanded polystyrene (EPS).

Lots of helmets have this for impact absorption as the inner part of the shell.

@Mollerski, I’m excellent at travelling light what can I say? I don’t need a checked in bag for a 3 day skiing trip.

I normally on the family holiday put my helmet in the hold in a large suitcase with everything else. I really don’t want nor need to take a big case though this time!

I have a Salomon touring/climbing/skiing/cycling multi-rated helmet which is a bit more compact than my normal ski helmet, and easily fits in cabin baggage.

3 days? pah! I just did 8 days (4 days work, with 2 ski weekends either side) with all my ski gear including boots, in my cabin baggage snowHead

My top tip is to use a silnylon (= super slippery) stuffsac inside your boots, unbuckled, and fill each boot with clothes. I could get 8 pairs underwear and socks into 2 ski boots. Then do the boots up tight.

@v1cky24, Wear the helmet whilst travelling is clearly the answer. You wouldn't look a total 'helmet' at all sitting on the plane wearing a helmet. Madeye-Smiley

I’m someone who is super cautious about making sure helmets are safe and undamaged, as I was in a horse riding accident when I was younger and the helmet saved me, took all the impact and smashed.

I’m very reluctant to have the helmets out of sight in the suitcases as I wouldn’t feel confident that nothing had happened to compromise them. I know chances are that’s very unlikely but I’d rather not be worrying about it. It’s definitely not a ‘look at me statement’ or any desire to clonk my fellow passengers as I move through the aisle of the plane!

Sounds like my best bet would be try to put them in small hand luggage bags to fit under seat in front, and fill the helmets with carry on items and a little padding around them.

Everyone employed by Easyjet to get the plane, its passengers and their belonging safely to the destination, are considered flight crew in my eyes. If you want to label each role, go for it.
