Tourists overrunning city centres I can understand getting upset about, but don't build infrastructure to entice tourists to ski resorts if you don't want any.

I doubt most people have any control over what gets built.

Probably someone from Milan who wanted some peace and quiet in the mountains, and then got upset when the resort they chose was full of (other) tourists...

It’s a fine balance, isn’t it? Nobody enjoys overcrowded slopes, Alpine lakes or hike paths. It’ll only worsen over the next decade … demand will remain the same but the supply of consistent snow will become confined to resorts above 1,800 metres (I’m not inviting a debate on climate change by the way).
This issue is only prevalent across peak weeks any way - we had a blissfully quiet long weekend in the PdS 3 weeks ago.

Same in parts of the UK and often more general opposition to development such as new housing.

Italians are tourists in the South Tyrol, so good luck with that one.

@Mollerski, yes, was thinking about that too.
This reaction is quite interesting in that respect:
....."A spokesman for Dolomiti Superski played down the graffiti, saying it was not the work of locals but of residents in cities such as Bolzano who “want the Dolomites to themselves”. He said: “People who live and work here do not complain.”.....
given the fact that whilst the vast majority of Süd Tirol is still very Austrian/German in thinking/culture/focus, precisely Bolzano (or rather: Bozen) is loosing it's Germanic dominance due to the influx from Italians living there.
It's a thing we as outsiders are mostly hardly aware, but this is definitely still a very sensitive subject in Süd-Tirol.

Sadly, times are a changing. Chatting with my good friend whom runs a mountain hutte, we discussed an iconic building/business in Selva which is rumoured to be coming up for sale. The current owning generation have taken the business from not much to a multi million euro operation through years of hard work and driving ambition. The next generation don't have the drive or ambition and therefore, no appetite to work as their parents have.
My friend's sadness comes from the fact that the business will likely be sold to a non local buyer. Hence the slow break-up of the local family run authenticity of the town.

Sounds like Local Hero.
'You can't eat scenery'
Always a fine line.
I always felt the French bastardised their mountains by building housing estate tower blocks at 6000ft but I guess it keeps the valleys relatively clear.

I think we have the second highest number of tourists by county in the UK here in Norfolk. I used to live in a coastal village and, at weekends, it was impossible to really get about much. However, tourism was the economy. I think the biggest gripe was the cost of housing due to second home owners from London.
That said, the winter was relatively quiet. the Dolomites gets no restbite in winter.
Being mostly I'm Veneto, the locals will be well.aware of what has happened in Venice I'm recent years and the ban on cruise ships and you can see their point.
Maybe Europe will move more towards the north American system of buying and booking tickets to enter national parks etc.

I worked in Dobbiaco / Toblach summer of 1990 , my boss mother tongue was German and he spoke better English than Italian. He disliked the old people’s view that S Tyrol belongs to Austria , he loved all the tax reliefs that he got from the Italian government for coming from a special region.
He welcomed tourist in summer but in winter he believed mountains only belonged to the locals, complained about the pistes being overcrowded and full of idiots, it was really funny hearing how he described city folks trying to ski and blamed Alberto Tomba for making skiing too popular.
He would not dirty his beloved mountains but I can easily see him be very very vocal about the abundance of people.

Not a lot has changed then! Last March the Italian barman in our Bruneck hotel said the same, the locals speak better English than Italian. Also seemed to be becoming more Brunico than Bruneck. Maybe it's the abundance of cheaper Italian labour. Didn't notice any signs of anti tourism.

How 'local' is local?
We have a thing here in Cornwall with the surf spots on the North coast. 'Locals only' graffiti has popped up here and there and it can get quite 'aggro' in the water. However, the 'locals' driving the campaign are 'blow ins' from who knows where who's Mum's have moved to Cornwall on a council house swap because she liked the idea of Kai and Jai being surf bums.
My proper cornish son who surfs, but lives on the south coast (12 miles away), had his car keyed for being 'non-local'.

I can understand the beef with AirBnB etc. meaning it is a lot easier for out of towners to get cheap holiday rentals. It drives up property prices for people who live and work in a tourist destination and increases occupancy well above anything sensible based on traditional tourist beds, that changes the look and feel of a place. It's like second homes, only way worse.
Just telling people to move in this circumstance seems a bit mad!
So maybe its better to describe as a revolt against over-tourism. Especially if the place was a former 'real' place which has transitioned to a tourist based economy in an uncontrolled way. Seems mad if it's a purpose built resort though. But those resorts really should give half a thought to the people that work in those resorts!

Until a "Covid XXX" enters the game, the borders will be closed to tourists. And after 6–12 months, all these people who are now writing "Tourists go home" will be protesting against the "New World Order" and the government—because they won’t allow tourists to visit the very places they don’t want them in right now…
People have a short memory…

The problem always comes where tourist infrastructure and shops crowd out everything else.
There must be loads of villages where it is now easier to buy a novelty cowbell than a pint of milk.
Just because some in your community benefit does not mean everyone does. And in places like Val Gardena, where nowhere else on earth speaks your language, the fear of being forced out is always going to be stronger than in other cultures.
