Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Jackson Hole, solo skiing

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Heading to Jackson hole for the first time tomorrow by myself, decent skier but won't be doing the harder run, can dabble off piste. Any thoughts on getting round the mountain, is there a means to join group, had a look at guide or private lesson but they are horrifically expensive, over 1000 dollars per day!

You can always ask the ski hosts. There’re usually a few at the top of the gondola. Look for them once you get off.

Yes on the hosts; they're usually also at the top of Thunder chair.

Bear in mind that if you take the tram, there is no easy or intermediate way off the top (Rendezvous Bowl), and it can be pretty gnarly up there.

Speaking of expensive, parking is costly at the resort, but there is a free shuttle lot outside of the town of Jackson.

I think the best off-piste skiing for a non-local is in the Hobacks, though I'm not current on conditions there.

While you're in that part of the world, go to Grand Targhee if you can.

Good advice from Scooter in Seattle, mtn hosts are around to show you about. Chances are you'll meet chat to some folks who you can tag along with too.

Depending where you are staying theres often free shuttles to Teton Village, as resort parking has reached new levels - if you are driving stop and pick up some travellers at a bus stop - works for everyone. Madeye-Smiley

Hobacks is a good shout, along with Tensleep bowl if conditions are good. Deffinitely take a trip to Targhee, better snow and totally different to Jackson. Theres trip organised all the time, but if you have a vehicle its an easy drive. If you do drive drop into O'Rourkes for breakfast in Driggs Toofy Grin

I did a solo trip to Jackson number of years ago, had a great time and met and skied with some great folks. Still in touch with some locals and we have been back to stay with them numerous times since, they're a friendly bunch really.

If you're feeling really brave head over to TGR and ask for some local to show you around Madeye-Smiley

This. N America resorts are much more sociable than euro. A simple "hi how are you?... Where's good to ski today?" on a lift probably gets you plenty of good suggestions. Not even that unusual for them to offer to show you themselves!

I wouldn’t send a “dabble off-piste” skier to the Hobacks first thing. It’s often a long 1000’ of moguls with no way out. Situated on the low part of the mountain, it also quite often has less than favorable condition while the rest of the mountains are more fun.

There’re tons of ungroomed runs peppered all over the mountain to get used to the rating system of JH. Many runs are “half groomed”, i.e. has mogul on one side while groomed the rest. Thunder chair would be a better candidate.

Get a “grooming map” first thing in the morning, those not groomed will be either powder or moguls depending on the weather of the previous night.

Agree on the Hobacks can get very funky. Honestly for a big (vert) mountain it's not hard to figure out - steeper terrain to looker's left, mellower to right. Go up the Bridger gondi and figure it from there. Don't stand in the middle of groomers - an instructor was killed last year by a meat missile. Save the tram for when you've a bit under your belt for the ungroomed bowl.

If first time at Jackson Hole - start from Apres Vous ... gentle but plenty off sides to explore, figure out the snow, conditions, pitch ... and move over to Casper and make your way to Thunder ... move up as you progress, Laramie Bowl, Rendezvous Bowl and then you graduate to Hoback's. Rendezvous Bowl always gave me the tough time ...

 You know it makes sense.

The comments about the Hobacks brought to mind our first attempt at them (probably over 20 years ago now). Late-ish in the season so they were half snow, half twig. We arrived at the bottom in a state of sweaty dishevelment to be greeted by the liftie who looked us up and down and remarked “guess you’ll not be going up there again”

Tim McChesney nailed it ... sometimes dropping first is not ideal but this time he was beneficiary of nice weather and clear light.

Nicely done, I hope OP got to witness live this NA classic !
