Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Am 86, fit but nervous about returning to skiing after fractured femur one year ago. Any advice welcomed.

Have you got medical insurance for the trip? That can be hard as you get older, and if you fracture was "low trauma" and maybe a result of osteoporosis, be careful! But hope it goes well.

 Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@OLIVIA, I admire your go-for-it attitude. My advice is to discuss your plan with a doctor who is familiar with you and your femur break. If they give you the green light, rock on. Find a place that has slopes that suit you, and go there when it isn't crowded. Maybe in spring, when there is generally good visibility, no crowds, and decent snow in the morning; the afternoon mush you can skip.

I fractured my femur 13 months ago.
6 months on crutches, 9 months of limited activity and 1st time on skis at 1yr Post surgery. I was very nervous and the leg was pretty week. I was only able to ski short runs at a time for up to 2hrs a day.
Slowly built up with a mixture if cross country, touring and piste skiing. 6 weeks on, I am now able to do a day's reasonable ski tour. Skate ski about 14 km and Telemark on piste for a day.
It cost me £200 extra to insure my leg.
It's a long slow process. Good luck.

 Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@OLIVIA,
There is another thread running on here re broken femur . Ive found it both helpful and supportive I broke/snapped mine last october and have just booked to go early march having had the ok from the surgeon who put the rod in my leg and whilst im a tad younger than your good self at 71 its being positive that helps so its possible as he said to me physical recovery is mostly helped by your mindset

I hope I live to 86 and if I do I can still ski. Good on you!
