 Poster: A snowHead
|
Hey everyone - I'm new here but I see quite a bit of enthusiasm across the forum for sharing experience and knowledge, so thought I'd try and tap into the expertise.
Background
- Been snowboarding for 20 years, now in my late 40s and still going strong [insert rock devil horns here]
- Last 10 years or so have been doing an annual long weekend meet-up with 2 other friends - they are UK based, I live in Berlin
- This usually means meeting in Munich late on a Wed or Thu, renting a car and going somewhere 2-3ish hrs away - then coming back Sunday afternoon/evening
- Have been to Gerlos/Zill, Zell am See, Soelden. Last few years have always been St Anton.
- In the past I've also visited Morzine, 3 Valleys, Serre Chevalier, Chamonix...but as family has taken a priority for everyone, the quick in and out trips to St Anton have become standard.
- We like après as much as the snow (why St A always gets a tick - every evening would end messily at Mooserwirt or Krazy Kanguruh). It's about a love of snow, but also a time to be together and reconnect, which we don't have many/any other opportunities to do.
This year we have fixed dates (6-9 March) and it looks like we're too late and/or have been priced out of St Anton. What does priced out mean..I think we would be happy with up to 150€ pppn, but not 350€ which is what seems to be turning up. Obvs a bit different if its a catered situation.
So I'm looking for a few suggestions / inspiration for me to do some searching (I tried Google Deep Research AI btw and it wasn't particularly helpful)
- I could fly from Berlin somewhere, so France / Geneva / Zurich would be possible (Munich is easier though).
- Fun is important; don't want to be in a beautiful but silent resort with no bars and nothing to do in evenings
- Want to maximise time in resort and minimise transfer stress. I don't mind a 3hr drive if it's easy like Munich-St Anton.
Any suggestions of resorts, towns, things I could consider gratefully received.
Meanwhile, hope everyones having a good season

Saalbach or Mayrhofen, either one would work well.

Nice, I'll check Saalbach. Also never been there due to it being a bit low, but beggars/choosers at this point.
Always been a bit put off Mayrhofen as I understood it was a bit spread out and bus based - maybe I'm wrong.

Maybe Verbier, Zermatt, or Engelberg? Look at flying to Basel too.
Zermatt is actually quite good for short trips as it usually has a lot of accommodation which isn't strictly Sat-Sat. I think people are put off by the long train ride there, but it's mostly a very comfortable journey.

@Agathachristie, St Anton accommodation is getting to be very expensive, anything less than €200 / night is becoming a rarity. Have you looked at Pettneu? Tends to be cheaper but easier to actually get to the skiing than many places in "St Anton". Ischgl would be a good alternative though I would guess the same accommodation issues. Saalbach might be worth a look, easy by car from Munich though train is possible. Mayrhofen is another lively spot with decent skiing and an easy drive. A bit further away but still within 3 hours drive is Flachau / Ski Amade (though roadworks might still be an issue)

There are multiple ski villages along the Zillertal valley and they’re all on the same ski pass. But Mayrhofen’s main ski area is accessed from a gondola in the middle of the town, no busses required. For a short break the Mayrhofen ski area is plenty big enough, for a one week trip I’d probably take the free train for days out at Zell Am Zillertal and Kaltenbach.
