A lovely ski-documentary from Black Crows about the old Super St Bernard ski area.
The ski area was nothing more than an old telecabin on Swiss-Italian border.
Some great skiing - fun little rocky chutes visible from the lift.
Plus an incredible wilderness off piste run (10km long!) over the back into Italy.
After a pizza in Etroubles you would catch the service bus through the tunnel to Switzerland.
I used to love a day trip here. It really was like a mini La Grave.
Unfortunately SSB closed down in 2010 just before lift accessed "free-ride" became something you could market to the masses.
Shame as with top station at 2800m it was very snow sure - but was frequently wind affected!
I was fortunate enough to have skied it in its last year of operating, after a morning of great of free riding we got to Etroubles just in time to watch the Mardi Gras procession and had a drink with the mayor before catching the bus back. A very memorable day
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

given that la Grave have been selling that since the 70s I suspect their problems were more fundemental. Like an expensive and clapped out lift. The fact that no-one picked up the ski area to run is also telling. Given the altitude it should be pretty snow sure.
Edited for spelling

Wind was always a problem with SSB - through the 2000s I used to do a week or two every winter based in Orsieres working alongside a local instructor/guide and skiing all the smaller areas in the vicinity. Unfortunately because of its proximity to the col SSB was often either shut or the snow would have been too wind affected to be fun (or safe) skiing. The price of the lift pass was also ridiculously cheap (not only by CH standards)...
Had some awesome days up their though - the old 'miners' tunnel was cool, and the Etroubles run was always a highlight !!!
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Cool film. Hardly a ghost town on a sunny weekend though. It’s absolutely rammed with people touring up to the monastery
Thanks for sharing - a shame they couldn't hold out to take advantage of free ride skiing thats become popular.
Then you can post your own questions or snow reports...

I watched this on the train to work last week and enjoyed it. Looks like an ideal touring area now.
After all it is free

Watched the Fortress one in the series too - looks like a decent Cat skiing operation, if your in the area

@offpisteskiing, yes, Haggis said the thing about wind. The curse of the col although good for kite surfers I bet.

What a lift it was...
Think these pics would be circa 2009?
1 lift, 2 valleys
Maybe of my top 10 ski days ever. Literally 12 people on the mountain on a pow day (maybe that is why they closed)
Some fun couloirs along the ridge
Tunnel to the 2nd valley
Skiing to Italy for pizza at end of the day
snowHeads are a friendly bunch.

Came out of the tunnel to ski down accessing the hospice.
It was an ISM ski tour, one poor woman didn't speak but her face said "poo-poo, how do I ski down that".
It was a leisurely descent......
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

What a great little film. Reminds me of the film posted here before Christmas about the Summer ski area west of Turin.
Makes you realise what has been lost.
Suspect we are going to see more of these type of productions in the next 20 yrs
