Why? Is there a larger landslide scheduled? |
Start of school holidays for France
If there's good snow too, then quite a transfer day is probable.
I'd go in Friday night to Tarantaise IF going there with much choice of route timing |
Maybe more traffic, but possibly less if people have time to plan around it. |
They don't usually into there though
Comically, I've been on a transfer bus that went off piste through backroads of Moutiers, following a companion company bus, the driver of which had a brother worked in a wood yard, through which we passed to make a short cut
The funny bit was we got stuck in mud, in that wood /timber yard, where we all had to "rock" back and forth in unity to gain enough kinetic cadence (along with the driver's clutch management ) to get us out
on about the fith iteration
All this to a loud cheer and feeling of something like invincibility
It's usually sclerotic Albertville to BsM though, in daylight hours on transfer day though.

I guess some people will try to book accommodation which doesn't use that route - but everywhere will be very full and that area has so many thousands of beds. It must have been terrifying to be on that road - and I imagine it took a long time and a lot of organisation to turn the traffic round and along the other carriageway.

Anyone got any idea about Information about emergency accommodation around Albertville (or what happens?) have been following the savoie traffic updates page but everything has basically just stopped. We’ve got our 3 and 7 year olds with us. Starting to get worried that even if we stop at the side of the road in a car park etc to sleep for a bit; if we restart in the middle of the night, the situation will be exactly the same. Just don’t know what to do. There’s nothing around here accommodation wise and all the local roads around the hyper market are jammed too. Been travelling to la Plagne since 4pm yesterday from Dorset

I’m rethinking my car hire tomorrow, are there taxis at Chambery to get to the train station?

@FiFi_Trixibell, You need the Olympic Hall in Albertville (la halle de Olympique) phone number 04 79 10 43 00 - a french landline. Good luck

Left Lyon airport at around 11.30 via a private transfer - stopped in Albertville at 3 for a break and got back on the road at 3.30 but were still in Albertville around 40 mins later so decided to ditch our transfer and get the train to Bourg. Finally just arrived in Arc 1950 with a lot of tired kids (left home at 4.30am)

Hit the queue just after Albertville. It took a bit over five hours to Moutiers. By the time I got there, radio was saying tailback was now 30km and delays of seven hours. Not any better the other side of Moutiers. Stationary back to a couple of kilometres beyond Aime. Not a good day to have skied Saturday before departing!

Hi We are in albertville in a private transfer after leaving Geneva airport at 6:30pm. Does anyone know if the traffic is moving? We’re trying to get to les arc 1600/bourg saint Maurice. Are we better staying in the car or trying to get a train from albertville? (If there is one?)

@Beth1111, definitely better off staying put and try again tomorrow. We got past Annecy at 12 and just made it to Val d'Isère at 930. The traffic did move slightly better the closer you get to Moûtiers, but it was still at glacial pace. With an estimated 800-1000 vehicles capacity through the tunnel per hour and more than 10,000 vehicles to clear on the road towards Moûtiers, you'd be spending the night on the road quite likely.
Train is better if you could get one, and get the funicular if it is still running. The taxis at Bourg are nom existent or very highly sought after

Due to the fact that our transfer is in an electric minivan, staying on the road over night isn't going to be possible. We've stopped to charge in Albertville and going to turn in for the night at the Halle olympique.

@Salgar Check the traffic situation before departure at https://savoie-route.fr/. It is being reported that it is likely that there will be single lane, two way traffic through the tunnel outside Moutier for at least a week, as the rocks need to be cleared from the road, the mountainside is still considered to be unstable and structural checks need to be made on the raised highway.

How are they handling traffic in the tunnel? Are cars stopped, or are they batching cars through to keep things moving?

@brovert unfortunately that's not possible, we have a chalet rented for 2 months in the middle of nowhere near Saint foy and all our stuff is there. Need the car for getting to resort each day etc.

yes is there a traffic jam inside the tunnel or just either side of it?

@leseuchertsnewb, Thought I'd posted this, but it doesn't seem to have appeared.
They're stopping traffic at the earlier traffic lights and letting it through in batches (automatic timing, presumably). After that it's moving freely (or was 3 hours ago), albeit still slowly until the other side of Moutiers.

When I went through the tunnel it was only slow traffic but not stopping. Slow because of the number of cars and the reduced speed limit placed for two-way traffic, but the tunnel is beyond the bottleneck (going to resorts) so traffic was flowing, albeit at reduced speed.
Not sure about the way away from resorts, but it didn't look as bad as going up.

Decided to keep driving rather than staying in Albertville and trying to get the train in the morning. Set off from albertville at 11pm and have made it to Cévins-échangeur an hour later, traffic moving in bursts but very slowly.

There are traffic lights before the tunnel staggering people through to keep the traffic moving. Made it to the tunnel (ponsenard) 3hrs after leaving Albertville. There was a steady flow of traffic through the tunnel and now we’re through the roads are clear

Nightmare for all involved. How have electric cars coped - or are there several come to a total standstill in the queues?

We left Courchevel today and passed through Moûtiers en route to Chambéry at about 0915.
No appreciable delay in our direction - traffic flowing freely through the tunnel.
The other (arriving) direction looked less pleasant. Queues back to around Notre Dame de Briancon / La Lechere Les Bains
