@johnE, Turin is used on Sundays for precisely that reason, most of charter flights come in on that day, or certainly always used to.

@johnE, I don’t think airport slots matter. There is plenty of availability at Lyon, Grenoble and Chambery, can’t say for sure about GVA. Plenty of availability at UK airports as a lot of the intra UK shuttles don’t fly on a Sunday.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I would imagine the main governing factor would be airport slots

Why would airport slots matter?
The main problem with congestion is people driving to and from the resorts and let’s face it judging by the registration plates I see most of those going to the French resorts are French.
Though Saturday to Saturday changeovers still predominate massively the use of more flexible booking systems on the internet means that other holiday breaks are possible (just)
Ps I’ve given up travelling to ski on Saturdays and go midweek to midweek simply booking the apartment for 2 weeks and leaving some empty days. Ah! the pleasure of being retired. |
We’re not retired. We like travelling to ski holidays on a Friday, flying back Sunday week. Saves a fortune on flight costs, far emptier roads, more skiing.

For three winters I lived in Macot village with a view across to the Aime bypass. Yes, there were a lot of daytrippers out there on Sundays, but by 9 o'clock in the morning they had arrived in resort (any resort - la Plagne, Tignes, VdI, la Rosiere wherever) and by nightfall, they were on their way home - in queues. Certainly I would expect a midday journey past Albertville and Moutiers to be quiet and stress-free.
@chocksaway, Sunday slots at CMF and GVA were always a problem, Saturdays even worse. On a Sunday, GVA would only accept diversions from CMF if the crew called "safety". 10 years ago, the Sunday attitude at LYS was along the lines of "you have diverted here, your passengers can wait on board until we are ready to handle them".

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I got stuck in this, we left Calais Saturday 1/2/25 about midday with a 9.30pm arrival time in La Plagne, we got to the hotel at 6am Sunday 2/2/25 Albertville To La Plagne took 7 hours I’ve never seen anything like it in my 28 years of being behind the wheel, no shortcuts either one way in only, French Red Cross were there handing out water the Olympic hall in Albertville was opened to accommodate people if they wanted to spend the night but Albertville was even at a standstill with people looking for shortcuts up the mountain
