@thecramps, my old man always says the same about BT/TNT. Sets up WRC to record and gets wrestling or something.

Interesting the views on streaming services, consolidation and what people are willing to pay. Also the thoughts on using FTA as a feeder for subscription channels.
It's a similar scenario with F1. They have their own streaming service which varies in cost depending on country but somewhere in the region of €85 per year. Unfortunately, due to Sky exclusive rights, this was never available in the UK and gradually the service is being withdrawn from other countries in Europe because of Sky's extended reach and other exclusive contracts Canal). When the FTA highlights on Channel 4 were due to end, they did get renewed as I guess someone saw these as providing value in developing and maintaining an interest in the sport to encourage new subscribers.
The problem for me is I would need to take out a full Sky Sports subscription for all the other sports that I have no interest in to cross-subsidise the fact they overpaid for football rights. Not going to happen, especially for a lesser service than F1TV. I'm still able use my F1TV subscription using Smart DNS and will continue to whilst I can. Many people who can't have switched to pirate streams.

I found an email from discovery+ in my spam folder inviting me to complete a survey, which I did, taking every opportunity to say I would not recommend them and would be cancelling when the subscription went up. Not that I expect this single response will make any difference.
My main regret will be missing out on the occasional insights which I gain from the technical commentary as I find I learn quite a lot from watching the experts (not that it's obvious from my rigid anxious skiing )

Just on a pedantic point, the Monopolies and Mergers Commission was replaced by the Competition Commission in 1999, which in turn was replaced in 2014 by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). I agree it's hard to keep up with all the changes!

If you have TNT with Virgin then I think you've been paying twice if you also had a Eurosport/Discovery+ sub. The TNT subscription should get you access to discovery plus as well. So in your situation I think (but can't be 100% certain) that you'll get all the skiing you do now, all on the new TNT3 & 4 channels on Virgin, plus access to Discovery+ to watch on demand or via the discovery+ app which gives you a richer experience than just on the tele.

Thankfully, we took out a Virgin package only a year ago, I think on an 18 month / 2year contract, so they have 'graciously offered' to pay the £18 extra for the duration of my contract, as a frequent user of the Eurosport channel.
I guess they are hoping that we completely forget about it at renewal time, and not notice the bill go from about £45/mth up to about £100

Just to add that the TNT package from VM is £18.00 a month - but you can remove it :: if you only want winter sports, bin it in summer !!

Live races available too, if you set your VPN to somewhere like New Zealand. However, no full, on demand coverage.

As per the other thread, why do you get a VPN and watch the plentiful winter sports on Austria ORF live, the coverage is extensive - alpine, xc, biathlon, ski-jumping (or whatever they call it now).

I live in Germany and can attest that the coverage of alpine skiing, cross-country, biathlon and ski jumping on free to air channels is very good. |
I do too, and agree. Das Erste have had full weekends of pretty much just winter sports since New Year. Really excellent. But of course there's the demand for it, especially the biathlon.

For Virgin Media users - found this on the VM forums
"..TNT usually costs £18 per month, if you opt in to this offer you will receive TNT Sports at £18 per month with a discount from Virgin Media for £18 which means you will not pay anything extra for the first 6, 12 or 18 months of service, depending on how many months you have remaining of your minimum contract term.
We will contact you at month 17 to remind you that the service will become chargeable if you don't remove it, if you do nothing you will be charged at the current rate from month 18..."

Interesting that there are deals on Virgin to get TNT included. This may be a good time to look at moving away from Sky.
Also I'd bet Sky have more impact that any of us if they get onto the board at WDB to complain that the death of Eurosport has devalued their subscription offering. Or maybe they're also now not paying for Eurosport. Who knows what the commercial arrangement was there.

I've been watching the races on German (ARD) / Austrian (ORF) services for a while using a (new version) Google TV, with NordVPN App running on it and then either the ARD or ORF apps. Usually one or both have the races either on one of the live channels or streamed. Of course the commentary is in German. I enjoy Felix Neureuther's commentary / analysis on ARD, and it's nice not to constantly hear how Dave Ryding, started on a dry slope in Pendle for the thousandth time. Theres usually a promo code to be found for NordVPN too.

You mean thats not what they are saying in German, or Zenhäusern’s long levers or Michael Matt’s brother?

I think it was Ed Drake the other day who used one of the phrases and then made references to "ski commentator bingo card", I think it may have been long levers or possible "low and late in the line".
It can't be an easy task commentating on individual runs of the same course over and over though, and it could be much worse. I sometimes watch a bit of drifting and one of the guys uses pretty much the same script for every run.

I was upset that I would be loosing Eurosport and the skiing and cycling coverage. Mrs D went on a live chat with Sky (which we subscribe to) and they added TNT Sport to our subscription for no additional cost but we had to take out a new 2 year contract.

Nick left Eurosport in January 2024 to became a director of FIS TV which was the newly launched streaming platform by the International Ski Federation (FIS). Ed Drake took over his commentary at Eurosport.

He knows what he's talking about - unlike the other guy (Charlie Brougham?). The Austrian sidekick (Marcel?) is good but tends to repeat lots of Ed's phrases!
