Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Skiing product design

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hey fellow skiers! I’m working on a new product to make our skiing experience even better, and I’d love your input. I’m designing something that combines easy ski transport with a built-in security system to prevent theft—something that’s portable, lightweight, and simple to use. It’s a product you can carry in your jacket, and it would allow you to lock your skis when you’re off the slopes.

If you’ve experienced ski theft or find it tough to carry your skis around, I’d really appreciate your thoughts on a few quick questions below.

1. Have you ever had your skis stolen? If so, what happened?
2. How important is ski security to you when you’re off the slopes?
3. Do you currently use any locks or devices to secure your skis?
4. How do you usually carry your skis around when you're not skiing?
5. Would you be interested in a product that helps carry your skis AND secures them from theft?
6. If it were priced around £30, would you consider buying a product like this? Why or why not?
7. What’s the biggest issue you face when it your skis?

Thank you very much - I hope to improve the industry with this product!

Definitely a problem in some ski resorts - good on you for creating something to solve it.

Never had skis stolen, use a Clipstic to move them around, that was 24€ so if you’re chucking in security for another 10€ i’d probably buy it for when I am not skiing in Switzerland.

1. - from a locked locker at night.
2. - very
3. - cable lock outside restaurants. Heavy duty cable in locker overnight.
4. - traditional way on my shoulder.
5. - only if it was extremely simple and quick to deploy.
6. - I would compare it with other locks that are available. If it was small and very robust I would pay more.
7. - ???

IMO any lock must not take up too much room in a jacket pocket. I only use a lock where it is easy for someone to take them away i.e. in resort or accessible by a bubble or at an apres ski venue. Often I just swap skis with a mate. At night my skis are secure. Clipstic is solving a problem that does not exist, so really all I am looking for is a small lock like a Da Kine micro ski lock.

If the OP isn't aware of the reference work by Hinchcliffe & Durtschi then they have no business designing a ski carry system wink

1. Have you ever had your skis stolen? If so, what happened?
I had brand new Hired Skis stolen from outside a restaurant. After that, I bought a lock.

2. How important is ski security to you when you’re off the slopes?
Very important

3. Do you currently use any locks or devices to secure your skis?
Yes

4. How do you usually carry your skis around when you're not skiing?
In wheeled bag when travelling. Normal way in resort.

5. Would you be interested in a product that helps carry your skis AND secures them from theft?
No

6. If it were priced around £30, would you consider buying a product like this? Why or why not?
No. A determined thief won't be deterred. My current cheap lock will likely deter an opportunist

7. What’s the biggest issue you face when it comes to securing your skis?
The faff of swapping to give an unmatched pair and finding something to secure them to.

2. Depends which resort I'm in but will lock in busy places.
3. Yes
4. Depends if I'm in a queue or walking
5. Possibly, carrying skis is not an issue (IMV) unless you have a mobility/grip challenge, haven't been shown how to or trying to carry mulitple pairs
6. Maybe, my current lock is a faff and heavy. As a previous commenter wrote no lock will prevent a a determined thief but if something was available to carry in a pocket to deter mistakenly picking up wrong skis etc then it would seem a fair price.
7. Faff and something just that little too big to fit in a pocket comfortably.

1. Have you ever had your skis stolen? If so, what happened?
Indirectly, have been with people who have had kit taken.

2. How important is ski security to you when you’re off the slopes?
Off the slopes? low - normally just use whatever facilities are at accommodation

3. Do you currently use any locks or devices to secure your skis?
Basic cable locks

4. How do you usually carry your skis around when you're not skiing?
by hand

5. Would you be interested in a product that helps carry your skis AND secures them from theft?
It would depend on the product - it'd need to work for both skis or snowboards

6. If it were priced around £30, would you consider buying a product like this? Why or why not?
Yes

7. What’s the biggest issue you face when it your skis?
resilience and reliability - have had reel cable locks seize up and had to break it apart or cut it off (which was alarmingly easy...)

7. What’s the biggest issue you face when it comes to securing your skis? It's not a big issue for us as we generally only use picnic huts or sit out rather than use restaurants. And we usually don't have to carry skis very far. But if something was light but effective against theft. And helped carry the skis. And was £30 would definitely consider it.

The product already exists. There are plenty of little lightweight ski locks. The product to help carry your skis is called hand + shoulder, most people have 2 wink

This is what I would recommend, as it:
- Uses a key (safer, but don't lose!)
- Has a thicker steel wire
- Can have a double loop to secure ski polls

Will be interesting to now at a high level what the OP is proposing that might have a market given that locks like the above exist and carrying skis is maybe something many/most don't have an issue with.

But, it is possible, it's something that when we see it, we are keener than we think.

It is a little heavier and certainly bulkier - but imo worth the compromise......Not an issue in a backpack.

One thing to bear in mind - it can be put on without the key, so if you get it, make sure you have the key before installing.
