For various reasons, things haven't worked out as usual with ski holiday planning this year, and if we go at all it will be some time in mid-March, with a last minute decision. In the (very) old days I remember using Ceefax/Teletext to get a last minute bargain. What are the modern equivalents? In reality, the last minute decision may be based not so much on price but on where the snow is currently good.

Thanks. Heidi looks good for this.
It always used to be the case that last minute you could generally grab a good bargain, but I get the feeling that isn't true any more, that prices actually go up close to the date. I've certainly heard that about flights, don't know about ski holidays, though.

I think that depends.
Peak weeks I think they might go up as it gets closer with very limited availability. Off peak I think there is still the potential.

@Blackblade, thanks. But I'm not sure we'll be going at all, which is part of the problem. My wife has had some nasty falls (unrelated to skiing) in recent years, with broken shoulder and torn muscles and wrist fractures, and is reluctant to put herself in a situation where she may well fall and hurt herself again, something I can quite understand. She's not said definitively that she won't be skiing, but she has suggested it's unlikely. If it happens, it will probably be a late decision, for a March holiday.

I can VERY highly recommend the Edelweiss und Gurgl in Obergurgl in that case. It’s not cheap BUT it is ski in / ski out (walk up stairs from ski room, turn left and get on lift) and, critically, has the entire ground floor as a spa. MrsJ2R is therefore guaranteed a good holiday whether she skis or not … and since Obergurgl is very high the snow will probably be good. Just a suggestion.

@Blackblade, yes, we've been to Obergurgl before and loved it - late season, too, beginning of April. I would definitely go back. But I doubt I could persuade her to go on a skiing holiday where she won't be skiing (and I wouldn't really want to myself, as I wouldn't want to go skiing without her). If we do make a last minute decision to have a ski holiday, it's rather intriguing, I think, the idea of just choosing where the snow is good. I've never done that before - always hoped and prayed that the snow will be good where and when we have already booked (and sometimes it has been, occasionally it hasn't).

I noticed Crystal offering 40-50% off last minute when I was browsing in January, so may be worth a look.

@Mike Pow, that's a great deal! It would be a grievous error to stay at home when something like that came up.

@J2R, Ski Miquel just offered out 2 all inclusive places (flying this weekend) at short notice on a 'make us an offer' basis. I'm sure someone will have got an absolute bargain. Worth keeping an eye on, and contacting the smaller operators who can offer this kind of deal - they suffer when they lose even a couple of customers, so clawing back some of the costs and giving a good deal is a win/win.

@J2R, If your wife is nervous about hurting herself, have you thought about body armour? It's a bit overkill but it sure beats getting hurt. Dainese is your friend here. Both I and my brother in law use it, he uses his mtb armour and I use my old motorbike kit.

Interesting idea. Presumably would only help, though, against puncture wounds and the like? I think she would probably be most anxious about something like falling awkwardly on her shoulder. Her shoulder injury from last year (bizarrely from something as innocuous as tripping over something while walking quickly in Tenerife) was very painful and took ages to heal (and she has still not recovered full movement).
I should point out that she's normally a pretty fearless, reasonably advanced level skier, and we ski the whole mountain together - she's not a nervous beginner.
