The article is a bit thin but it is hard to see skiing in the area on anything more than a limited basis as sustainable in the light of climate change. Certainly not something that warrants a funicular that would be more at home in Zermatt

I can’t see any serious resort ending up with a jerry-built funicular like this one.
PS I can’t get the archived link to work.

they were advertising an £85k role as their business manager last week. Can't see how they can afford that salary plus NI plus pension on top.
They need to turn the place around by pushing mountain biking, hiking, laser biathlon guns, bird watching, high ropes course, zip line etc etc in my opinion. Skiing needs to become a minor part of their revenue with the risk of no snow becoming greater as the years pass. Completely change their direction but have skiing there when the snow arrives.

Must be a big bonus on offer for the CEO role then. Better not be set by the same Rem Ctte as the RFU.

You could, or you could market it as exactly that. People love the wild and getting away from it all. Log cabins as accom are relatively cheap to build compared to a hotel and are very popular. ROI is amazing (having done this in the outback of Norfolk).

Every one of those is already available and thriving just down the hill at Aviemore, Glenmore etc.
Businesses have already diversified in the area, there would be no point in people driving past them on the way up to the Cairngorm car park..............................

Cairgorm has been a goat rodeo for decades.
To the point where most people just go ski touring rather than use the limited uplift available.
Right now they could have the top basin ski lifts (ptarmigan and ciste) running on natural snow for kids & school groups.
But because the funicular is broken (.... and management removed the chairlifts) there is no way of getting there.
So instead they focus efforts on maintaining a tiny patch of artificial snow and magic carpet at the bottom next to the cafe.
Absolutely bonkers if you think about it.
Unfortunately the funicular was always the wrong lift in the wrong place.
I fully support the VMP which prevents visitors leaving the top station in summer. The cairngorm plateau is fragile arctic tundra unique to the UK.
However, the visitor rules mean the lift can never be used for repeat custom in summer (such as hikers / bikers or the other ideas suggested).
Unfortunately, HIE refuse to acknowledge this obvious flaw and continue to place all bets on making the train a success. Even if that comes to detriment of the ski area. If the funicular does operate again then the same fundamental issues will remain.
Clowns.

Bloody hell, that/this is depressing.
But anything else aside this "The uphill railway, which cost £19.5 million to build, has been out of action for all but eight months in the past six years while undergoing £25 million of repairs." deserves scrutiny/sorting. How can something new cost more in repairs in it's first 6 years of existence!

The Ptarmigan restaurant would make a great alpine refuge and the top tows might lend themselves to a weekend club operation…..but beyond that ?

Apparently maintaining the Coire na Ciste chairs (providing access to top station) would have cost < £1 million.
Instead, the management tore then out.
Why?
Basically an alternate route to top risked fewer recorded passengers on the funicular.....

If you actually want to understand what is happening at English rugby I suggest you listen to the Good, the Bad and the Rugby podcast where Bill Sweeney gives a full and frank interview. Its interesting how three critical pundits including those shrinking violets James Haskell and Mike Tindall, change their position as the finance, structure and responsibility are explained. It certainly changed my negative view.

@Fast Pat, wrong thread for this discussion but……..
So he deserved a huge bonus after the “business” produced a massive loss , had a rubbish international season and lost three of its top 20 domestic teams, a disastrous attempt to introduce the tackle height law (to name just a few) . All that doesn’t happen overnight and all due to exogenous factors beyond his control. Yes, as they say hasn't he done well.
All he did was sack some people, anyone can do that.
But thats for another thread. Come over to the current rugby thread!

Lol.
This has been rumbling on for 2 decades.
A state-run catastrophe.
Close it all down.
Give it back to nature.

Seem to remember seeing someone giving a reasonable costing for a gondola down to Glenmore.
Comparable to the funicular and could have far better supported year round activities (down hill mountain biking, hiking access etc) potentially even doing it to the top with mid station where funicular currently starts.
Nowhere near as useful for skiing, but opening up a bunch of lower terrain for downhill mountain biking as well as simplifying access for hiking would have brought in money that could have maintained the skiing they have...
And I expect pylons would have had less impact than the concrete track.
Of course now it's too late for that option...
