As long as the baggage handlers play ball then it has to be:
France: apartment size
Austria: we all know that pig, potato, egg and pig sausage isn’t a balanced diet.
Italy: overgrooming and gnocchi
Switzerland: the exchange rate and resting on your laurels
Norway: vikings and 3hrs daylight
Andorra: stag doo’s
Canada: we need more than just a base station that sells poutine and chilli.

Why do so many men hate gnocchi? And often polenta? But usually happily shovel down other carb basics such as mashed potato, pizza base and pasta?

You're just not meeting the right kind of blokes.
Worst bit: waiting for snowboards to come out on the conveyor. Still stressful even if you've planned for what happens when they don't.
Canada: you just need to plan carefully and work out in advance where the edible food can be found.

I had no idea, in general, that they did !
I like both … and polenta with cheese is a great mountain dish in my opinion.

I didn't realise many people don't like gnocchi, but have noticed lots don't like polenta. I like it, especially with calves liver cooked in the Venetian style.

The inability to get a good night's sleep at altitude for at least the first four nights, particularly when combined with additional alcoholic requirements, early starts and physical exertion. This is exacerbated if the flight out needs a 2am start!

Another man who likes polenta and gnocchi here! Polenta is best when it's cut into chips and fried if you ask me but I do like it when it's in its creamy form too (and would always pick that over potato mash which imho is the worst way to cook a potato!)
As for the worst parts of a snow holiday:
-Package transfer coach dropping you at the airport hours before you can check in
-Icy/packed out pistes
-nervous skiers in long lines all the way across the piste
-nervous skiers scraping all the snow into piles
-skiers not part of the group trying to jam themselves onto a lift with you when there is no real queue
-skiers kicking/running over the tail of your board in the lift queue

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I really don't see the point of polenta, ok for the first couple of mouthfuls, and then is starts to set like wallpaper paste. I've tried it in Italy many times, so not just bad quality stuff.
@dode, I'm with you on the Canadian thing. Had two great trips to Canada, one to whistler, one to Banff/Louise, but the mountain food was very forgettable. WIth one exception. Sick of jacket potatoes, and bread bowls of chilli we went to a nice place off the back of Lake Louise. Think it was upstairs in Temple Lodge. Had a delicious lunch, and just as we were served the chocolate fondue, some really rude journalists arrived. They were giving the waiting staff a really hard time, complained about the wine, service, etc etc, which was all perfectly fine. It really spoilt the end of a nice lunch, as they were very demanding and argumentative. Whether deliberate or not, I don't know, but the card payment for the rather expensive meal never went through. I certainly paid, and the waitress took the machine back to the till afterwards.

Yes! If you hate the food so much it’s the WORST part of the holiday!!!
Why go on “holiday” when a significant part of it is so insufferable?

Imagine being so entitled you think it's ok to barge your way into other people's personal space. Next time you feel like trying to jam your skis into a space already occupied by other people's snowboards maybe give your head a wobble and wait for the next chair in all of about 5 seconds.

What's "personal" about an empty seat on a chairlift, or a bus or train for that matter? I have taken a lot of chairs on my own. Should I have felt offended if someone "jammed" their way on beside me?

@Origen, I think the problem might have been that this person was manspreading his snowboard. Seems anyway as though it needed a whole seat's worth of space on its own.

Its not a private space , its not like you’ve booked a table at a restaurant. And its only for ten mins or so. I take it you would not like sharing a gondola (even if takes 80) ?
How do you manage on public transport? Must be a real trial?

We don’t know. Perhaps he’s so well-heeled that he flies to the Alps by private jet!
It’s proper for him to moan about not having a private ski resort! A private chair on the way up is a small ask for the lots of him.

I do have sympathy with incompetent snowboards on chairlifts, having been one myself. I generally tried to get my back foot in the (Flow) binding before dismounting, which did involve jiggling around. Never on busy days and my dear husband used to warn the people behind in the queue (when there were any) that as a beginner I was a bit unpredictable getting off and they would probably be safer letting us ride up with just the two of us.
Competent snowboarders have no problem with chairlifts though they might have a "preferred side" of the chair.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Then should they go on before they are competent? Doesn’t the same go for skiers or anyone, don’t go on a lift /run until you’re competent?
If they need a wide berth I suggest a bib with a big red L on it.
|
|
|
|
|
|
@Origen, I doubt that competence is actually the issue here, sounds like pure entitlement to me.

Worth a listen to the ski podcast last week, talking about getting train to the alps. I think still a little limited if you are not near London but interesting to hear how easy it can be, having interrailed in my 20s a few times I know rail travel is underrated but I think with a family of 4 it is a little pricey and probably adds to stress levels changing trains with luggage but for a single traveller/couple I'm sure its very pleasant. Still an alternative to flying and airports. |
We're a family of 4 and get the train across. It's our favourite way to get to the Alps. Our children are 11 and 13, though, and well travelled, so changing in London and Paris is no issue. We have two gigantic 4-wheeled cases to minimise the amount of cases we need to transport. Far more relaxing than both driving and flying.
Worst part for me is packing those cases either end of the holiday. Particularly on the way back.
