I wore masks during covid and still got covid 3 times. Don’t believe they work based on my experience, it’s just Sod’s Law and won’t stop me travelling but as per the thread title it’s the worst part of it for me……..and before anyone piles in I really can’t be bothered with this turning into a typical SH’s covid/anti vaxer/mask debate or argument!
Ps. I don’t get embarrassed I’m a 54 yr old adult with a very strong self belief and confidence |
I loathed wearing them when travelling, especially in hot airports. Was a bit of a farce on planes, anti’s made drinks last an age to keep them off.
I would find it a cringy being the lone wearer.

Yup, everything about the last day and going home.
- Getting packed up and throwing out any food you can't bring with you (and paid a fortune for)
- The last evening meal - knowing it's the last evening meal
- Going to bed surrounded by all your packed luggage
- Seeing the forecast for the fresh snow that didn't happen when there
- Usually getting up really early to go down and wait in the foyer for the transfer (without breakfast) with the other motley crew of maudlin stragglers, also waiting there
- Hoping there will be enough seats on the coach to sit together
- The very quiet (often long) transfer, where everyone is tired and in the same melancholy mood
- Being decanted at an overly crowded airport, where there are queues for everything, including over priced snacks and where seats are at a premium
- The flight, without the twitter of excitement experienced on the way out
- Queuing for luggage and dragging it to the airport bus to take your car
- The depressing drive home, with skis ready to decapitate you as you go round a corner
None of the above mattered when heading out for the holiday....just the hopeful anticipation of snow cover as you climbed ever higher up the mountain, before finally entering the resort. |
Dude you're doing it all wrong!

Seems to be an airport theme here and mainly factors out of everyones control. Its shame as I used to find that quite an exciting part of the trip but have to say airport/airline/time has a big factor in how pleasant or unpleasant it can be and a bit of a lottery too.
I find airport security now so confusing, new machines don't seem to speed anything up and the whole belts on/off, shoes on/off, laptops in/out , liquids in/out bag no bag, seems to bear no correlation to up to date equipment or airport. Im travel a reasonable amount for work so like to think im fairly efficient in the process.
Had a rather curt lady tell me to take my belt off (which is plastic for travel) as the machines are not metal detectors. Same airport but different terminal a week earlier where it was ok to wear it i was also asked to take liquids out but was ok to leave in but not wear my belt this time. So confusing.
Does put a downer on the travel experience

I agree airports are a major downer. The best I've experienced for a while has been Gatwick. I find it difficult to believe that the huge expenditure on security is cost-effective. I feel much the same way about "lock down" during Covid.
Generally I much prefer to travel by car, not least because you can chuck all your stuff in and choose your own entertainment.

Really anything that happens prior to unpacking the gear when in resort and anything that happens after the last run of the week.
Two trips to Tignes and two abortive transfer. December trip plane could not land at Southampton due to bad winds thus rearranged train, flights and transfer ex-Gatwick two days later.
Return from January Tignes trip the coach driver missed two clients in Bourg, turned around at Moutiers and went back to get them, although traffic almost stationary. Whilst he collected the two customers the entire coach missed their flights to Southampton & Bournemouth. Thus another flight to Gatwick and an extra 2 hour train journey.
The third trip...... I think I have had enough of travel to the Alps for another year. Have cancelled any plans. Can't face flights and transfers and will be unlikely to ski 3Vor EK again (been over 20 times) due to the transport issues.
Everything in resort was great. Didn't even fall over!

I actually enjoy coming home after a week of hopefully enjoyable skiing. Everything conveniently located around you and comfortable, central heating rather than dubious electric heaters, hot water that doesn't run out, few days off beer rather than drinking daily. Like most people when you're done you just want to go and the sooner I'm through my door the better. Can't ski forever and I don't really want to if you lived out there you'd pick the best days and may only ski 10-20 days a season.
What I find sad is the passage of time, getting older, losing my kids to age just surviving formative years and realising I can't remember them. Nothing as pointless as going home from a holiday.

I enjoy being back at home after a holiday, too, and love where I live. It's just the getting here can be a mission.
And people saying "a bad day on the mountain is better than a good day at the office" annoy me! I had lots of good enjoyable days at my office and when you only have a week off, and each day has cost you a small fortune, having one or more of them go badly wrong is very disappointing. Mostly I was staying in our apartment when skiing, so it was just a case of go home, put the kettle on, sit with a drink and read or watch the TV if the weather was awful. And never even ventured out of the door when it was really terrible, especially in the rain. But when it's such a palaver getting somewhere for a week I think feeling disappointed about bad experiences is perfectly understandable!
Renting cars is not a panacea but I prefer to be in charge of my own destiny. Though did have two punctures in (Swiss) rental cars, over the years, and they were a right pain to deal with.

In the early years of this millennium I adored the Ashford to Moutiers-Aime-Bourg Saturday daytime trains. Minimal security at Ashford, parking just yards away, only 6 hours to those Tarentaise stations traveling up to 180mph (?) and Paris completely bypassed. Just one train! Plus it was not expensive, even humble us at the time travelled first class.

Re illness, I can really recommend that First Defence nasal spray. I spent 2 hours on a coach sitting near a very poorly child followed by 10 hours at Chambéry airport surrounded by people coughing and got nary a sniffle!
For me the worst part is handing your gear in on the last day as it really means it's over (although I'm always thankful to get to that point in one piece!).

Well the figures I saw (I can't remember where) were that a mask improved your chances of not getting Covid by 20% but the other person wearing one improved it by 80% (the virus is in tiny water droplets at first, which the mask catches).

When I was younger the worst thing was getting to the end of day 4 and knowing there's only 2 days left and, well, not wanting it to end. I don't mind so much now as we're retired so don't have to go back to work and have the option of going away again.

Greedily, we changed to 8 or 9 day trips many years ago, it makes the skiing and mountains vibe last so much longer. Independent travellers usually.

Travel delays, particularly if combined with travel company / airlines clearly doling out "misinformation" in the hope that a problem will be resolved. Now that the offspring are long-since old enough to look after themselves, the expected/usual grind of travel doesn't particularly bother me, so long as I've charged my Kindle!
Injury / illness - Always best avoided.

It's amazing isn't it, how a fairly small regional airport can have such long walks to remote gates. And it all seems designed to herd people into crowds, maybe to maximise the panic retail.
