Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Post Accident Insurance Stuff

Day 1, run 2, Mrs G hurt her shoulder, game over. (She's fine btw)

We took out insurance with the ski pass. She was stretchered off and taken by ambulance to the local clinic at Morillon. I have registered the accident with the insurers.

Question: Will I get a bill?

If yes, will I pay it?
Or forward it to the insurer?
Or will it all be transacted between the piste rescue crowd (fantastic) and the insurer?

I have searched, but I can't find any specifics.

Ta.

@Charliegolf, ask your insurer

@holidayloverxx is right.

But fyi when I broke my wrist we had no option but to pay the bills and we then claimed them back. However they were relatively small so this wasn’t a problem, I might have baulked if it had been a large sum.

@Charliegolf, recent experience with family member had CN give no bill for rescue etc, medical examination taken by ehic (as UK resident) but with std French system €19 cost of admin payment at medical centre.

The pistuers did indicate and discuss /disclose the rescue cost but also indicated that would be payable IF there was no acting CN status in place. Otherwise €0 from them in this case.

@Charliegolf, assuming that the pisteurs took the reference number at the time for the insurance, then the bills are usually settled direct.

@holidayloverxx, Online only, circular press-button-back-to-same-page-repeat. I got an email from the 'rescuers' telling me ther's a chage and linking to the insurance I had taken out. I THINK I have done all they want, with no response.
@richb67, Same at the clinic, which is paid and claimed for on holiday insurance, but nothing on costs from the piste rescue bit yet.
Je suis... thanks.

Thanks all.

I had a fall last year in Austria (# humerus). Walked to gondola escorted by ski patrol. Gave my GHIC to the ambulance staff & at the hospital & not a penny spent - other than for pain meds, which was later paid back by my insurance company!

@Charliegolf, when my hubby needed an ambulance in France, we gave insurers details to the ambulance crew and bill was sent directly to them. We informed the insurers of the accident on the way to the 2nd hospital. We did not receive a bill, but if you do, give it to your insurers. Ambulance transport in France is private and is not free unless you are in a serious accident such as an RTA and are taken there by the Sapeur Pompiers (Fire Service).
Hospital bills were taken care of using the GHIC. It was a major emergency operation, so was free of charge othere than the daily fee for a hospital stay. Bill was about 170€ and was forwarded to insurer (hospitals charge a daily fee). They paid whatever they needed to.

If you didn’t present your GHIC to the hospital (an admin would usually ask for it) then you will need the details sooner or later. Your insurer will ask for them eventually in order to recover any cost they have to pay. What invoices you receive and pay yourself vs forwarding to the insurer may vary with circumstances, so I wouldn’t worry too much about this as long as you have the funds to pay stuff and then wait for insurer reimbursement.

Helicopter evacuation runs at £100/minute or more for the total flight time, from take off to landing. You don’t seem to have needed this so your charges if any will be relatively modest in comparison.

One logistics issue is if you need extra seating on the flight home. When my wife broke her arm LV=‘s agents got us a row of 4 seats on an apparently already full flight so she could travel without people beside her. They would have arranged and paid directly for a taxi to the airport but we already had a rental car anyway.

If your wife has to stay to recuperate in order to be fit to fly, then your insurer should cover subsistence for both of you until she’s OK. Who organises this may vary by insurer and circumstances e.g. if you can just stay in your current accommodation or have to move somewhere else.

When I made my last claim, I found myself paying charges of not more than ~£500 before I got reimbursed. The £4600 helicopter evac bill was just forwarded to them and they paid it direct as unlike you, my wife had declined the skipass assurance.

Your friends in all of this should actually be the accident management company. If you have a decent policy then they will do everything they can to sort stuff out and streamline the claim. The sooner they can get you back to the UK, the sooner their liability and costs cease, so they have a commercial interest in helping. I found them to be really helpful with advice - they’re doing this every day so have useful insight and experience, or should. For example, I had no idea the airline would need a Fitness to Fly statement from the hospital: they told me to ask for this and when one was provided, in French, their translators and medics checked it was OK, and passed it on to the airline.
