I negotiated a new EE 2 year SIM only contract early in Nov 24. I did have an old contract which allowed EU roamimg so I said I wouldn't change. I was talking with a human and they said that they would include EU roaming free, I checked twice and was assured it would be and that the EU roaming would appear as a 'greyed out' add on. It did.
In Jan as I emerged from the tunnel I got a text saying I would be charged £2.47 a day for roaming. I checked - the add on was still there so I assumed it was a generic message. I received a text today saying I was approaching my spending cap. So, 2 hours on 'chat'. Seemingly on Dec 4, EE dropped roaming from a lot of their tariffs. Googling I found some people had received texts I haven't - I still have all the EE texts. So, I have incurred £35 worth of charges which they will not refund and have had to upgrade my contract to Essentials Plus to get free roamimg. I will of course, be following this up when I get home, if necessary with OFGEM. It is a long time since I have written one of my 'special letters' to a CEO.
So check your contracts, and if you get a message saying you are being charged - you are irrespective of what your App tells you.

You might get a better response from OfCom, than OfGem!
Joking aside, if that's intentional then that's really quite sharp practice. I do subscribe to the view that often these things are 'cock up' rather than 'conspiracy' but even so that is a costly (for you) mistake (by EE).

Yeah it's a strange one. I got the text in nov/Dec saying free EU roaming was coming to an end for me on 22nd Dec. Well I spent a week in Austria over Xmas and currently in Tenerife and both times I've received the usual texts saying my sms and voice are free. Nothing showing on account about extra charges at Xmas in Austria either.
I'm on an old legacy sim only account as I paid the phone of years ago so the moment they actually cancel my free EU roaming I'll be off anyways.

@Lowrom, We are both on a "pre-brexit" sim only contract with Three, it's getting steadily more expensive for the data quota compared to new tariffs, but it's still free roaming for our up to 90 days trips which is a huge saving. If they stop the free roaming we will cancel immediately! Every time we go abroad we get the standard message about roaming charges, but in the small print at the bottom it still excludes us.

Funny you should say that, but one of the competition lawyers I used to work with at Vodafone is now at the CMA. Not in the running to be the new head, I don't think, but fairly senior.
Of past VF UK senior execs, I can't imagine any of them heading OfCom. Way too naff. One of them is at Visa, where I work now - which turns out to be next door to the VF Group office, where we both used to work. Small world, literally.
TBH OfCom was always pretty toothless when it came to consumer redress. It certainly isn't like the FOS in retail banking.

Do they have "terms and conditions" that potentially restrict it? I try to keep an eye on whats around in case we need to change, but most "free roaming" now is potentially restricted to shorter periods, or data limits (looked at Lebarra, free roaming, cheap, etc, but the roaming is restricted to your average UK data usage, and we go cycle touring we are rarely on wi-fi so much more data than at home)

@chocksaway, I spoke to EE last March about a new deal for me and my son.
Although it says I need to pay the £2.47 a day, they have an addon which makes it free in the EU.
Worth a call, they can turn it on immediately.

I’m on an old EE sim only contract. Haven’t changed because of this potential issue.
It really is bad faith that you were told that roaming would be included then you didn’t get it. Surely either misselling or breach of contact

Oh, and I just called them to check - Amy from Newcastle just confirmed that I wont be charged (I kinda knew this as I have been abroad a few times since I changed last March).
I think its a mistake, give them a call.

Free offer 2€ a month SIM with some data (small amount) calls and texts. It helps those of us who sometimes need a French mobile number, as there are a some official sites that won't accept a UK one.

Yes, O2 (once you ask) is an incredible deal. In recent holidays in the US and Alps we used the data to death, including hot-spotting the family devices with the contract. £12 per month, no nasty surprises when the next DD’s went through.

A good while back I switched to GiffGaff and then more recently to get wifi calling when we dropped the landline Smarty.
These ones are ones you CAN pay a monthly amount for calls / data etc but are pre-pay type which don't let you use anything you haven't paid for, so no nasty surprises. You can change up and down each month as you need. Eu roaming is covered to a fair use limit. You can purchase ones to cover other areas usage as well.
I have the girls on this as well with their phones, giving me 10% of all due to being under my control.
Good luck in challenging your provider but definitely look at these type of providers (and see if you can get a little cashback from quidco).
I am currently paying £6.30 a month unlimited calls 15gb data which I never go anywhere near but was promo from black Friday meaning for same money I had been paying for 8gb I got 15gb.

There is a "booster" option that you can turn on and off for months that you are in France to add more data and calls. I need a French number for my French bank account.

why do people sign up to long contracts on mobile phones?
Even financing a phone through one is pointless, as it is easy to get interest free at a lot of places.
1 month rolling. Jump sims as it suits.
As for the change - they have to notify you. Do you have proof of your existing grandfathered extension, etc.?
They cant move you to a new tarriff without your agreement (or lack of it if they notify you).
Fight it. Clearly a breach of contract & you should at least have the right to cancel.

@RobinS, I made the mistake of changing contracts with 3 and got clobbered with roaming. Switched to Smarty, who use 3 network in UK, and they have free roaming.
Not sure if still case but Mrs B has free roaming with Tesco Mobile still, might not be case for new contracts

Try looking at https://www.uswitch.com/mobiles/compare/sim_only_deals/
I replaced my O2 account (SIM Only, £18/month) with another O2 account more data, all other T&Cs the same for £6/month
Bizarrely it will you will be able to get deals you can't get on your providers "live" website

Many institutions in France cannot cope with UK numbers as their systems data fields are programmed to handle french number format of 10 digits while the UK has 11. We've had this problem when providing contact details with via online forms. Same issue with UK postcode format.
Good luck resolving EE issue.

Changed from Vodafone in Dec to Talkmobile. Basically from Vodafone with free eu roaming to Talkmobile ( who use Vodafone) with free eu roaming.
Had to be at the time, back in the UK to do the switch.
But instead of nearly £20 pm, now only £7
SIM only monthly contract, so will see.
Every few days, still get the usual text saying data roaming is free up to limits. Though the vast majority of my usage is wi-fi.

While I'm sure you have the moral high ground, I dont think I could stomach the argument for the sake of £2.47 a day. Fair play if you follow through with it - I think we all agree with you from what you've said so please do let us know how you get on.

My O2 contract includes free EU data only - not USA. Yours is the first time I've heard of anyone having the USA included - and all for £12 per month! Out of interest, how much data do you get for £12? |
I double checked. £11.99 per month, there were no nasty surprises after any long holiday in the US or Alps. Phone was pounded on roaming, with two other phones doing the same via personal hotspot. Such good value, we’ve got those signed up too since, only needed a call to O2. All independent contracts, not a family deal.
Didn’t even barter, I’m lazy about such things. At the end of a contract that had included the phone cost instalments, I called O2 to ensure the phone cost element had ended and their sales person said can we offer you a deal with ultra high data for Europe and the US. Yes please.
Includes Switzerland. Following 8 days in Arosa, with two other phones hotspotting again, the same £11.99.

@monkey, An update!
I sent a long letter with evidence to the CEO of EE. After about 10 days I had a call refunding all the extra charges and 50 quid in way of compensation. Seemingly I should never have been offered the contract in the first place, their problem not mine!
