The plane came down in the French resort after an incident with parapenters. Two people in the plane died after it hit a chalet.
From the link:
Reports say the plane was involved in an incident with two paraponters (sic) in a 2-seater craft and it then hit the roof of a chalet in Méribel-les-Allues .
The two people in the plane, aged 58 and 26, died in the accident, said the Savoie prefecture.
“A single-engine plane, with two occupants on board, ended up on the roof of a chalet in Méribel,” said Albertville public prosecutor.
“Before crashing, the plane apparently caught two paragliders in flight.”
The Savoie firefighters said that “the two paragliders were shocked but unhurt”.
The chalet was unoccupied at the time of the accident.

@Alastair Pink, happened just over the Ronnie in Morel and hit and empty chalet. the paraponters were experienced guys apparently and both successfully deployed emergency parachutes according to to a couple of friends in the know..

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Incredibly skilled/lucky paragliders, reacting correctly in the moment.

Well I guess either they, or the aircraft, were somewhere they shouldn't have been.

very near the Meribel altiport so my view would be paraponters too close to airspace but pure speculation..
There are powered paragliding airshows over the Fole which is under 1km from the airport so they must have some sort of agreement, radio contact, or close the airport airspace while that happens...
Given the mid air happened no more than 500m from an active airport communication must have went very wrong.. ((

The 'Ronnie' is not at Morel! It's at Ronde Point, further up the hill by some distance!
Very sad for the families.

@JDL65, for sure but we are talking hundreds of metres, not kilometres. hard to say exactly where and what altitude it happened at but a lot of people saw it from the Ronnie so had to be fairly close. Very sad all round (

Yes very sad, but I was pointing out that you had stated that the Ronnie is located at Morel, which is not where the Ronnie is!

The lunchtime TV news report said that it crashed in les Allues so I'm guessing the chalet is in the Morel area.

@rjs, correct, I was a touch concerned as Jnr lives in Les Allues itself, and initially thought the plane had crashed in Les Allues centre, but was told it crashed onto the chalet which is in the Morel area. A few of her friends saw it from the Ronnie, which is nearby. I need to work on my punctuation

A very tragic accident, the only relief being that the paragliders were uninjured and that no-one on the ground was involved. Hopefully the accident investigation will reveal what went wrong.
The aircraft involved, F-BAYP, a PA18 Super Cub was the very same one that Henri Giraud landed on the top of Mont Blanc in 1960, aiui the first and only time this has been done. I was hugely privileged to have flown with Henri Giraud in 1997 from Alpe d'Huez in his DR400, F-BOPT, I had no idea at the time quite what a privilege this was! I was an 87 hour pilot with no prior experience of tailwheel or altiports and he had me flying landings with two pleasure trippers in the back. Memories of "plus Moteur... PLUS MOTEUR"... At an Altiport, I had to learn to land "comme un oiseau".

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Meribel is an uncontrolled airport with no dedicated airspace. There is an air to air radio frequency for coordination which may involve someone on the ground but there is no air traffic control as it stands. The local aviators of all types will be a close knit community who will get together on a regular basis (I know the ones in Tignes do and at the last 'open doors' at Tignes, half the Meribel gang were here). The English phrase in these instance is 'see and avoid' - just a tragic accident in my view.

I saw that plane fly up the Arc 2000 bowl last winter, at a very low altitude, close enough to see the two people aboard. I can remember thinking what an amazing view they must have.
