Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Beginner in resort with shin pain

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi folks,

Number 3 son is on his first Uni Ski trip in Avoriaz 1800 and just finished three days of beginners lessons with Evo 2.
He has quite a bit of shin pain and was wondering if anyone know if any of the ski shops of pharmacies sell any of the gel shin protector pad.
Not been to Avoriaz and never needed shin protection.

Help.

Thanks

Alan

I think just about any pharmacy will have something suitable.

You might laugh, but in my experience, shin pain when skiing is related to leg hair. The solution for me was a razor blade. I hypothesise that you are having the leg hairs constantly pulled, which makes it raw and thus sore. Certainly, shaving my shins turned a pair of boots that hurt a lot on the shins into ones that I used for ~15 years till they had a catastrophic failure and were very comfortable. I now shave my shins every year during the skiing season. It grows back by the summer.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

This also might sound odd, but it could also be exacerbated by dehydration. You dehydrate more at altitude and it makes any inflammation worse.

I'd expect a lot of ski shops in the resort will have them or something similar.

Shave em as well. Plus use a compression sock rather than bulky ski socks if anyone has em.

There is only one pharmacy in Avoriaz. It is above GlobeTrotters/Mir Famoose/Sherpa towards the bottom of the main ‘street’.

That's what I does.
ie, Double your socks over the shin bone.

@snowscot, Sore or sharp pain? If the latter, then teenagers are prone to shin splints, especially during growth spurts. Might want to get it checked out by the Doc when he gets home.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Applying some ibuprofen gel to the area will help take the edge off the pain while the boots are on now that the damage has been done.
