Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Spraying your mates with snow

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Anyone with kids knows they will aim to spray you with snow every time.

On the plus side when they were little they generally bounced off me when they messed it up and hit me.

Now they're in their 20s they can actually stop - and yes they still do it Laughing

I was taught in a lesson how to safely spray by doing the hockey stop along side, rather than above the victim.

Taught my kids the same method after they demonstrated the incorrect and frankly very dangerous uphill technique. snowHead

I stop.

Carefully and sensibly.

The Grom, now 19 and taller than me, and competition standard, without fail sprays me from head to foot.

I stop with absolute expectation he will do it.
The fact that I know that he will do it and he knows that I know he will do it always makes me giggle.
In our case it actually is always funny.

@holidayloverxx, who are these others you speak of? If you mean random punters then obviously not.
Good friends and family are fair game. It’s funny and always will be. The title of the thread is “spraying your mates”, I think some people round here need to lighten up.

Having had the pleasure of meeting valais2 I am perfectly certain that no son of his would harass strangers in that way.
I love the idea of honing the technique of family jokes.

I learnt to ski about 45yrs ago. Then, our less-than-salubrious state school, had a ski club that ran a bus to Cairngorm every weekend.
We were divided into a few classes based on ability and taught by school teachers, also based on their ability.
The game was to feign out-of-controlness (is that a word?) as you suddenly veered to the side of the piste and collided with the student stood at the top of the Indian file of kids stood at the side of the piste. The bigger the domino effect and hence the more topples the better. Every weekend! We all knew the fis code, that applied to everyone else that wasn’t on our bus. Religiously.
We were all fair game and we were always the only targets.
Then you get older, life wises you up and you realise that you were just young turks that were lucky to be born when a state school could have a ski club that skied on snow every weekend. I think that bus has left.

@holidayloverxx, never skied in Flachau but it sounds terrible if getting sprayed by dickheads is a regular occurrence. Has never happened to me in 20 years in Val d'Isere. Is it an Austrian thing?

I’ve seen that, happened to others, on very rare occasions. I assume they know the person they sprayed. But never to me. Not by acquaintance, casual friends, never mind random strangers.

If you do that to a stranger in the US, you can expect them to chase you down and spray you back at the minimum. Or wack you with their poles. Or much worse.

Without wanting to get branded as a complete sexist but perhaps it a Dad/Child thing rather than a Mum/Child thing.

I do it to my kids (now 6 foot plus) but no where as sucsesful as they do it to me. No one would dare do it to Wife/Mum, its not her humour.

A little harse to call that one an attempted hockey stop as I think most of us would have trouble stopping with only 1 ski on. Around the 20s mark it looks like she tries to take off her speed a reasonable distance from the racks but, well doesn't. She tries again around the 30s mark but clips some "I'm just going to abandon my skis here" persons skis (not somethign I've ever really understood, especially that far out from the racks/restaurant) which means by 33s there's clearly nothing but a boot on her left foot.

Sure, at the end of the day too much speed/too little control but not like she was __trying__ to ski right up to the rack and do a huge hockey stop.

Indeed the boarding equivalent of this is actually a far more effective snow spraying technique if you get the angle just right.

Isn't this emotional/social intelligence area of behaviour? Valais2 acting in the role of parent in defining how something like this can be judged.

Essentially the fabric of interaction and judgement that a parent can give their children in navigation of "big" society, when they're out on their own making decisions.

To me there's clearly those that have learned what is appropriate, that it can shift hugely, and making intelligent approach to what is acceptable and when, fundamental in its importance of societal interaction.

This thread demonstrates the understanding of that, but some won't see that Toofy Grin

The Grom would never spray outside the zone of father-son humour other than with ski instructor friend Luca, since they do it to each other.

He knows and understands boundaries. He climbs after all, which tends to be a rule bound no cowdoo culture.

Here, in 2019, at age 12, he refines his technique on two other family members. The last 20 is slo-mo and those with patience will be rewarded. Also note frequency of ski flap

An instructor mate can look behind him, anticipate my line and kick up a huge cloud for me to ski through. Advanced level sh!thousery.

I can't believe adults are entertained by getting sprayed with snow.
I guess you move onto toy fighting after that?
Or getting someone to kneel down behind someone and pushing them over?

One of the great pleasures of spring corn is angry little frenchmen complaining about chewing on some incidental roost. My response generally being "you don't have to get so close"

Actually the REALLY annoying spray is from twin tips.

Seriously.

I have to be very careful behind some friends in some snow conditions. I was following my partner with new Lines and immediately got a face full of ice ball corn snow which genuinely hurt and took some skin off.

Regularly ski with mates who are boarders. If they’re going to wait on their knees looking uphill, then…..
TBF skiing mates do the same to me so it’s all good. Plus following anyone with twin tips = snow in face.

Why would you “follow” anyone in the first place? Toofy Grin

A bit on the serious side, I saw a group of 20 some people going under the lift, a narrow corridor of off-piste with fresh snow. The first few skiers were able to find their own line that has good snow. But the rest of the group were basically skiing the hard packed snow with ruts created by the first few. That’s off-piste at its worst!

I was baffled as to why they go in such a big group. Then a day later, I heard they lost one in the woods, who had to spent the night out and had to be rescued by ski patrol the next morning! Talk about a “successful trip”, not!

With one particular ski buddy, who skis faster than I do, so I need to keep up/not lose him. On piste. Works fine unless I get a bit too close and blinded by the backwash. Toofy Grin

Friends of mine had an accidental version of this off piste. One was stopped and the other came in to join him (two instructors, both incredibly experienced off piste). Second guy's ski skids and bounces on a slick tree-root hidden under the snow. Catches first guy just above his ski boot and cuts his shin to the bone. Fairly major blood vessel of some description severed. Results best described as "gruesome". Especially as this was during covid (yes, yes, going out touring was allowed under the local rules at the time) so he had to get himself off the hill and down to hospital, which took quite some time.
