If you fancy a laugh by doing a hockey stop above your group of mates to spray them with snow, make sure you know how to do a decent hockey stop. Saw a horrible incident this morning when a skier tried to do this, at speed, completely cocked up the hockey stop and hit his (for now) friends like a horizontal missile. The scream from one of them was quite blood curling, and I’d guess it was a job for a blood wagon.
I think it’s a dickhead thing to do, even if you get it right.

Absolutely but it isn't going to stop dickheads. See also racing each other on a public piste or playing fastest speed on the tracker or indeed any other "chill out grandad it's only a laff innit" type activities.

Better yet, get a snowboard. Your ability to spray snow with a board is much better....

Bollards! the ability to 'break other peoples legs and knees' is the same for any type of snow sport.
I would argue that the ability to be out of control is far higher on 2 planks than 1

I imagine you can hurt people just as mush on two planks as one. It's amazing how everything becomes a snowboard bashing thread and skiers are holier than thou!
Agree dickish thing to do that will land people in hospital regardless of your chosen sliding method. Snow sports are a dangerous activity only heightened by numpties (which includes skiers as well as snowboarders).

I'd literally never considered this till an instructor told us to never stop above him on the hill for that reason. Makes sense and pretty much stopped me spraying snow - though I didn't do it that much to begin with. Still, I can't resist sometimes doing it a little bit on my kid... Yea, numptie.

Indeed even if not aiming for a hockey stop spray, if you're stopping above someone it increases the risks of a cock up and slipping and planting your skis / board into their legs, so always safer to stop just down piste from them.

@B., think generally advice is to stop below people on piste, stop above them off piste (as they may have stopped because of a hazard you can't see)

Based on 20+ years of playing ice hockey, and as such, a pretty reliable hockey stop, on both sides, maximum hockey stop snow spray is achieved with aggressive weighting of the 'uphill' ski (outside edge of rear skate on ice), which means if you are not careful, or the terrain/surface changes between both skis, or you hit a rock/ice ball, an equally aggressive un-weighting of the 'downhill' ski. If you're balance isn't bob on, downhill ski slips, you tip back up the hill, downhill foot/ski flies up in the air and karate kicks your mate in the ribs.
It's a lady's front bottom move and if one of my friends tried it on me they might quickly experience a few of the less desirable ice hockey 'skills' that gets you sitting at least a double minor for retaliation.
Hockey stop is a valid skill to have on the slopes, but comin' in hot head on to your mates is asking for trouble. Sadly dickheads gonna dickhead regardless of location, sport or chosen weapon for sliding downhill on.

I was very surprised when in a group lesson and the instructor waved people down individually, and each would pull in above the previous, at the side of the piste. I thought all it would take was one failure to stop and the rest would be dominoed down the hill. Was very surprised when the instructor didn’t correct them. When it was my turn I just went to the bottom of the line.

Many years ago myself and Mrs did the BASI intro to ski instruction, or some similar title.
Our trainer was Julian Griffiths, first session "never stop above the group and never ever think of the snow spray". One young guy who obviously had a hearing deficiency was later told "next time you are finished on this course"!
Utterly daft thing to do, but it happens.

Surely the big reason to stop past your mate and stop downhill of them is so they take the force of whatever dickhead comes barreling along next? I've always thought of that as personal protection.

But aren’t all bets are off if the intended victim is a snowboarder sitting in the middle of the piste doing up their bindings, surely they are fair game?

Even when not trying to spray misjudging a stop above can result in minor "injuries" like broken poles etc

Its a dangerous sport, as long as you only cripple a mate it's all good and a great apres story at the bar later when he turns up on crutches.

A friend of mine last season attempted a rapid stop before a rack of skis outside of a restaurant on the mountains......well the ski rack stopped him. He picked himself up like nothing had happened. I walked off pretending I'd never seen him before in my life.....

Why would you assume, heading for a ridge, that there's nobody there so you can blast straight on? Would you do that on a road?

Impact 8/10 but spray rating 2/10 frankly. Needed to make more effort to turn sideways and lean back on edge well before impact. Definitely needs practice. Please improve and resubmit.

No need for a hockey stop to spray snow, a solid heel side slash along a drag lift line will usually nail quite a few humourless skiers with minimal risk to the snowboarder doing it.
If a group is stopped, I personally prefer to Ollie over the top of them. Less risk of breaking legs that way.

I got sprayed by a complete stranger (skier) yesterday when he decided to come to a stop above me whilst I was sat (still strapped into my snowboard) at the side of the piste, very visible, above a ridge, whilst continuing to look up the hill.
He was immediately very apologetic, and I can only assume that he just didn't think it would cause that much spray. He certainly wasn't over-doing it and actually came to a nice controlled and not at all aggressive stop.
So I laughed and happily accepted his apology and that was the end of it, with us both wishing each other a good day, when I got back up to head off.
It's quite civilised here in Switzerland.
