Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Cheap Tignes S/C apartment recommendations

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Dear Snowheads,

I would like to go to Tignes with my 15 year old son in April and stay in a cheap self-catering apartment with him. I have been to Tignes loads of times but most recently staying at the UCPA. Ideally the apartment would be in Le Lac and it needs to have bunk beds or separate beds. I have rented apartments before in Tignes and know they are compact. It would be ideal if the apt was in Le Lac but VC or Lavachet is doable. If anybody has any recommendations and thoughts then that would be very much appreciated.

Thank you for your time and help. snowHead snowHead

I'm just back from a few nights in Les Tommeuses in VC. I felt VC was much easier to get in and out of than Lac.
Location is spot on, ski in ski out, nice and quiet. Appartment had a bunk room, sofa bed and single pull out. Felt pretty spacious.
Let by Interhome.

@JayDub, why not just use the tourist info website?

Why Le Lac? Maybe for the pool place?

You don't say which week in April but I assume its school holidays with a 15 year old. Lots of studios on booking.com, Interhome and airbnb. Prices start at £330 but that is in Palafour at LeLac and they are very small - better to pay more for larger place. We have stayed in all Tignes areas many times both winter and summer (when summer skiing was a bigger area).

@Nadenoodlee, sure and I recommend he searches the tourist information website Laughing

He also asked for "thoughts"....

His only pre-requisite was that it had bunks/twin beds with seemingly a preference (not not absolute) for Le Lac but with no reason given.

When it comes to apartments in France you either go the Pierre et Vacances/Odalys type route (not my personal preference/advice) or you use a search facility to find one of the numerous private rentals (tourist web, immo, booking.com, Interhome and airbnb as mentioned above). Many of which are very similar and just down to what floats your boat. Or use Sunweb/Snowtrex which I believe are often punting out P&V/Odalys type stuff.

Of course there can be recommendations for a specific residence but that would depend on information the OP didn't give - such as if it needs to be close to ski school, lifts, shops, parking, etc.

Thanks for all of your inputs folks. We want to be in Les Lac so we can walk to ski-school/mountain guides in the morning. I am not at all adverse to VC or anywhere else . A recommendation for a specific place would be good, I have stayed in PV and CGH apts in the past and searched up places. We want to arrive on the 5th April for a week it would be good to be able to walk to the guides and ski school, but not a requirement. Thank you.

@JayDub, I don't know what you are experience of booking apartments, or specifically in France, is.

My personal preference is to go as direct as possible - I've rented direct from owners in the past, through agencies, through tourist information website (usually goes to immo after initial contact/booking), I have used Odalys once, P&V many years ago and another similar company once.

Usually you can find a Plan de la Station somewhere that shows where they apartment blocks sit in relation to the front de neige, lifts, supermarket, parking, etc. Although we have children we don't use ski schools but when they were young we wanted to be able to sledge and not have to walk far to/from the lifts. Also we drive so where to park (preferable for free) was important.

Again, I don't know what your experience of French ski apartments are. But the most common/standard is for 4 people with a mixture of sofa beds, bunks, pull outs. Sometimes there are studios for less than 4 and there are some that cater for 5-7 people. Bigger ones exist but much rarer. Aside from the location as above it sounds like you just want to make sure there are two separate beds which shouldn't be too difficult.

Price wise April is generally cheap anyway so if booking fairly direct prices won't vary too much. Some places are a bit newer renovated, might have a nicer shower or something. It comes down to what takes the eye. P&V, etc will be more standardised. And may have a reception area and maybe a pool, gym even.

There were a few cheaper ones but I specifically needed a door between rooms to block out the snoring
I had about 15 saved on Airbnb , I’ll dig through them and send you the cheaper ones, when I get home

@Kenzie, hi I am aware of Chalet Chardons, I have stayed down in Les Boisses/Les Brevieres in the past at the FUAJ and the early morning start to meet with my mountain guides meant I missed breakfast, I had to get out very early bus, but thanks for the suggestion.

@Layne, thanks for your advice, I have booked places in La Plagne, VDI, Tignes using owners direct and such like. A 4 bed place in Tignes is smaller than just the bathroom for one in an Austrian B+B! I have quite a good idea on the 'size' or lack of it, I have skied absolutely loads in and about Tignes/VDI. We will be driving down from the UK.

@JayDub, have you thought of Les Menuires. Free parking, plenty of easy access to ski school meet ups. Easy access to lots of high altitude slopes.

I do know of one "dinky" place - direct let - can dig the details out later.

I don't know Tignes so well, last stayed in an Odalys in Val Claret (last minute thing) which was poor. I've stayed in Les Lav and Brev and Val D but all a long time ago.

Try the Palafour building in Tignes Le Lac, if you book through Travelski you can get a lift pass inclusive deal for about £1200 for two adults, not sure if this cheap enough for you but might be worth a look.

There's a few options on the website and this link will take you to one of them, the block is in the same building as the ESF office opposite the tourism office. It's basic but I have stayed there before and you usually get a ski locker on the ground floor. The apartments as pretty old so some have been updated others have not, you need to pick from the pictures.

If you get the lift pass inclusive deal then it might suit

I stayed at the "Résidence Inter-Résidences Pierre & Vacances" in VC with my 16yr old a couple of years ago. Booked it through Sunweb, so got the lift passes bunged in with the booking. Yes, it was basic, but sprog had his own 'den' in the corridor, and I got the sofa sleeping in the lounge. Worked perfectly for us, and the pool and sauna at the end of the day was good for a wind down.

Slight walk to the lifts (maybe 200m), but you were able to ski back to within about 50m, if you blasted down the race piste and whizzed past the end of the Club Med building.

Wasn't the cheapest I could find, but ticked loads of boxes for the February Half Term.

Hope you find something that works for you.

@Layne, skied from the UCPA at VT loads in April, I prefer Espace Killy for the freeride options compared to Les Menuires although I did some wonderful side country touring in the VT/Les M area. Thanks for the idea though.
