MSE had cheap Lebara sims that allow roaming. Like 50p each per month for 6 months with no minimum contract.
I used a portable WIFI in Japan with no issues. Cheaper to buy a second hand one than renting one

Would Tesco family sim suit? - unlimited rolling monthly data and calls (inc roaming in 2025) £30 1st phone each subsequent phone £10 each so family of 4 = £15 each person - we have it for us for all the time but can be used as temporary plan for 1 month.

Need to check how much Eu roaming is included in your UK data plan. Like Im having gifgaf, no matter how much uk data you have, only 5GB is EU roaming allowed.

Take a pack of cards and "pass the pigs" game and tell them all to pack book to read. A digital detox will do them good.

I'm in France at the moment using a Saily eSim. It's great. Do check with the tourist office in Montgenèvre though, here in flaine you can hire an internet dongle with unlimited data for about €40 for the week

We've used Airalo all around the world (Inc France). Dead easy for data esim. Lots of options depending how much data you need and you can always buy another one to top it up if you run out.

O2, up to 25gb data roaming just comes out of your normal allowance

I’ve never had fair usage applied to me while using EE roaming even using 150+gb a month. Walked into Free in Reims and picked up a monthly sim 350gb a month cancel anytime.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

We're in France at the moment, for a few weeks, also in an apartment without wifi. My UK contract is with Three, who have a 12Gb/month fair usage policy, which they do enforce, and which I burned through in no time.
I figured out which network's signal was strongest in the apartment and then looked for an e-sim provider that uses that network (Orange France in our case). maya.net advertised that they use Orange so I bought an unlimited* e-sim from them. Works out at two or three euros a day from memory. You can buy it on their website directly from the phone (assuming you have data from some other source when you do it). Apple Pay is enabled so checkout is quick, and I was up and running in a matter of minutes.
However, note that "unlimited" in maya.net's dictionary means "3Gb at full speed per 24 hour period, timed from when you first bought/activated; severely throttled thereafter". They do also offer a 5Gb/day option at a slightly higher price. Their website is rubbish unfortunately: it will tell you how much data you've used since purchasing the e-sim, but not how much you've used in the 24 hour capping period (idiotic design). So I use the iPhone's own metering to keep a track, trying to remember to tap "Reset Statistics" in the "Mobile Service" page of the Services app at approximately the right time each day.
In hindsight I should have gone for the 5Gb option, because I'm doing some work calls (on Teams, with video) when here, as well as tethering a laptop to the phone in the evening, to watch streaming TV through an HDMI cable. Turns out you can burn through a LOT of data without trying too hard!
