 Poster: A snowHead

Hi,
We’ve left it last minute for a Feb half term break, which means accommodation is slim pickings. Found a hotel just outside Chatel, about a 10min drive.
What’s the parking like either around the Linga or Pre la Joux / Pierre longue lifts? Will it be hard to get a spot in Feb half term?
Thanks.

Plenty of parking at Pre La Joux but does fill up. Might be worth parking at lac de Vonnes as although a smaller carpark never seems to be as busy.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Also plenty of parking at the Panthiaz lift in La Chapelle d'Abondance, which may well be closer to your hotel.
Up two lifts, ski down into Torgon, up another lift and you're at the start of the Super Chatel area.
Or you can park at Panthiaz and catch the ski bus to the various Chatel start points. Some of the parking at PLJ is so far from the lifts that people catch a bus to them.

Does it have to be France - other places might be less busy?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

As @Doofenschmirtz, says there is plenty of parking but get there early. Vonnes was pretty well full today but that might have been Sunday day visitors.

You will need to be there before 9 during peak holidays to get a good park and probably better to head straight to PLJ. PLJ fills early for the 9:30 lessons which are tricky to make on time by bus with kids in tow. Better option is to get the valley bus to avoid being part of the traffic at the end of the day. We leave our apartment in central Châtel at 8:30am when we have early lessons.

Having a look on Google maps and can’t see any obvious parking at lac de Vonnes, is it the car park next to the Gabelou lift?

Yeah, that's what I meant.

Lac Vonnes parking is good option if you also want to access Super Châtel but it gets people coming over from Switzerland and also fills up - I have seen cars parked right up the road to the second hairpin during holidays. You are also at the mercy of Gabelou closing time if you have left your return back from Avoriaz late. My first option is Linga (less traffic at end of day) and then PLJ. Explore the bus option if this is convenient from your accommodation.

It's not unusual at busy times to find the PlJ parking so packed that you need to park a km or two down the road. Yes, you will find somewhere, but by the time you've driven up and down trying to find a spot, then walked to the nearest bus stop, to avoid walking twenty minutes in your aki boots, you'd have been much better off taking the bus all the way from Chatel proper.
The Vonnes car park does also get full - I've often seen cars parked half way up the first stretch of the road up towards the pass when I've been coming down.
Linga also can be difficult.
In all cases there is a simple answer though - get there before 9. When I've done training sessions or courses starting at PlJ with an 0830-0845 meeting time it's usually been possible to park right up the top just a few metres from the Pierre Longue lift. Or indeed the PlJ lift a little further down. But getting there at say 1000 can often be more problematic.
Of course, if I'm driving over from Morgins I don't really have the choice, but I'd certainly recommend anyone in or around Chatel to work out the bus services and use them instead of parking.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Looks like early doors at PLJ sounds potentially best, was just looking at La Perdrix Blanche, and seems it opens at 8am and does breakfast. Since we are room only might drive up there early grab a coffee and brekkie there and start off as soon as the lifts open.
*this does depend on marshalling kids out though which could scupper this plan!

Breakfast at Perdrix are only croissants and hot drinks which we’ve done many times passing time with kids before lessons . Thiink the breakfast mentioned is for hotel guests. You could grab food from bakery on the way through La Chapelle or Châtel.

This looks a great option, think we’ll start from here one day.
