Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Who pays for maintenence of Cross Country Tracks?

A nerdy question but out for a walk today round the lake near my apartment and got me thinking. There are loads of beautifully maintained cross country tracks here that are bashed with marker poles etc. Given you dont pay for a pass to use the tracks who pays for all the upkeep? Lift company, Marie, clubs ??

Just curious...

In Les Saisies you DO pay to use the cross country tracks, though the cost is modest.

@skimottaret, in Meribel it is the town hall - that is the ratepayers who pay. In most places in France you pay 10-12 euros for a day pass.

Personally I see Méribel as the Devil's own country.

If you were looking out of my patio window right now not sure you would still feel the same.... but hey ho the worlds biggest resort with Frances first National park on your doorstep with a trout lake and free cross country skiing may not be everyone's cup of tea Smile

It's never occurred to me to wonder who maintains the cross country area in Saisies - I just assumed it's the same as the downhill tracks - all seems to come under the same banner on the website.

And do they charge for their use, or are they like parks in the UK - a public amenity?

Here in Flachau I think it is the council. the tracks are free to use but in the surrounding area there are several langlauf centres that you have to pay to use.

In Saisies you could hike and get into the ski de fond area without paying for the lift pass but it would be a real faff and given the low cost probably nobody would bother. And no pedestrians, snowshoes or dogs are allowed. Anyone with a downhill lift pass is allowed to use the cross country tracks, which is another reason to suppose costs are shared.

Yes, sitting here in the world's biggest ski resort, with completely free cross country skiing, I agree, although we're a good hour away from the national park.

I guess you must be referring to the world's second largest ski resort.

I'm not sure who gets the money, but in the Seefeld area an XC day ticket is € 2 or € 180.00 for the season pass. They do occasionally stop people and check for tickets. Mrs M has been checked (obviously skis like a tourist).

@skimottaret, Mérihell isn't my cup of tea, even with free trout fishing. I've certainly seen a lot of old trouts around town.

Yes it is usually the local council / tourist board that provides cross country tracks and prepared winter walks in Austria.

In Finland, you are expected to buy a trail map, either paper version or app. Most of the cost of this pays for upkeep. Not expensive though.
