Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Selling second hand bindings?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but outside of the very expensive touring options do people actually buy second hand bindings?

Long story short I bought my son new skis at xmas (Atomic Bent 90s) which came with multiple defects, which didn't get any better after 5 days of skiing on them. The shop have said Atomic are going to refund them for the skis once I send pictures of them of them chopped up but the refund I'll get is for the skis only, which will leave me with a set of lightly used Marker 11.0 Tp 90mm bindings. I can understand that as it's a package the shop put together and not Atomic, they're in another country so it's not hassle free but it still stings to be out of pocket on such a new purchase.

The easiest option seems to be choose another ski/binding package and try to sell the bindings but I've only ever sold complete ski/binding setups in the past?!

Those kinds of skis are sold flat, so look out for a deal for skis only and mount the same bindings on them. If you buy them from a store that can also do the mount (i.e. probably an actual shop), and explain your problem, they might do the mount at a discount.

Thanks, that is probably the easiest option if he chooses another ski that the brakes will fit. If not I'll be out of pocket for a set of brakes and a remount. At that point it probably makes sense to try and sell.

Didn't expect a company like Atomics products to be giving me this headache, no idea now whether it's a one off and I should be seeking out a replacement, or if I should be looking at other brands.

@damanpunk, as you bought defective goods from the retailer your contract is with them and not Atomic. I would ask the shop for a refund on the package and leave it to them to get a refund from Atomic.

Atomic normally make pretty good products (I have boots, skis and bindings from them), so it's probably a one off, but have a look online for other reports of issues with that particular ski (I certainly wouldn't rule out the whole range) if you're worried. Or just choose something else that's similar. Brakes cover a range of widths, so as long as they're closeish, you should be ok, but a shop that does mounting will know for certain.

Funnily enough I have a set of bindings I was thinking of selling at some point.

I think it's a bit of a niche sell because really, how many people really need a set. If you are buying new you will generally buy them with them. If you are buying second hand skis they will come with. Most likely I guess is someone has a broken binding.

Yes I have sold second hand bindings, but only more unusual ones eg telemark or touring.

I normally buy second hand bindings and buy skis flat, then mount them myself. A lot of people mount bindings themselfs.
Its normal to sell/buy bindings in good near new condition, but i would never buy something that used quite a lot for many seasons, but still there will be buyer for them for a right price as well.

It’s the shop’s problem to resolve. If you paid with a cc hen you’ll also have S75 cover through your card provider. Look at moneysavingexpert.com and read their SADFART guide to your rights

Interesting reading. I'm need a new set of bindings. Recently bought a new pair of boots with GW. Bindings on my Carvers are not compatible so they're useless at the moment.

If you paid with a credit card you may be OK; but if - as it appears - this is overseas then you're lucky the shop even talk to you.

Just to update this, it turns out people do buy them! I removed them and did a bit of destruct on the skis so Atomic would refund the retailer without me having to return them to France.

Then the retailer replied to an earlier email where I'd offered to send back the bindings but they said they were now going to refund the whole package and no need to return the bindings.

Threw them up on ebay and someone bought them within a day, they got quite a lot of hits in a short period.

Was a pretty easy process so thought it was worth naming the retailer (Glisshop) for the service received as they could've made it a lot more awkward than they did. Maybe they took pity on me due to the short timescales (ordered start of December)

So now my son has his refund plus a bit extra burning a hole in his pocket and is trying to decide on a replacement, or if he should wait for next years models to be released... as we're not hopeful for much more ski days in Scotland this year...

@damanpunk, cheers for coming back. Might put mine on then!

And good to hear glisshop did good as I've used them in the past.
