Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Long sunny ridge in the Alps - What to expect in terms of snow quality

 Poster: A snowHead

Hello,

We are due in Les Deux Alpes a week and a half from now (~25Jan).

Following the recent dump of snow, the weather forecast has been for low temperature and sunny skies.

I am recent to skiing so wondering what conditions will be after 2 weeks of "good weather" with sun and low temperatures but 0 or very minimal snowfall. (for mostly on-piste skiers).

Thanks!

@Yona, If it's been below 0 the whole time, the snow is likely to be good, what could effect the pistes more, is the amount of wind they have or haven't had. If it's been cold a lot, they'll also have been making snow too.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Most of the pistes will be fine I'd have thought.

The ones that will catch you out are either super high traffic steeps (e.g. blue runs down to big lifts that have a steep section that everyone cuts turns in every day) and runs lower down that have patches of shade and light.

Both of those could be icy and might not be fun for new skiers.

Main pistes in general though will be fine given how much snow the piste bashers have to work with, particularly high up.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Although I confess that I, like many Snowheads, are a bit obsessed with the value of good tuition, I'd suggest that you think about whether a couple of private lessons would be worthwhile. It can be particularly helpful when conditions aren't ideal and you lose confidence. Here's a specific recommendation. Charlotte is a great instructor.

It's too soon to tell, 25th is still 10 days away. That's a lifetime in weather forecasting. Nothing really reliable beyond 3-5 days away

Sure, there might be a trend developing, but a slightly different actual situation tomorrow compared to the situation calculated by the weather model could result in a substantially different forecast calculation after that.

Thank you both. ESF booked already for lessons and indeed weather can change a lot but the current trend is for a long ridge to remain for the next few weeks at least so just wanted to mentally prepare. I am an intermediate skier but the last time my gf was on the pistes was in Japan with 1m of fresh powder ... so she has been spoiled and now has to deal with the harsh realities of the Alps haha.
