 Poster: A snowHead

Hiya one and all.
Back in the sales in April I bought a shiny new pair of skis and opted for the Marker Squire 11 bindings to go with them. I've taken them to my local shop to check over and they were saying that the squires aren't that good, particularly because I have older DIN style booties, not the latest grip walk jobbies, and also because I'm not a lightweight at ~90kgs. I've since used the interwebulator to research and I'm a bit worried.
Should I be? Has anyone had any experience of these bindings?
I really don't want to buy new booties until I am forced to for obvious reasons.
I mainly ski on piste but do go off if conditions are ok. My DIN setting is 7-8 depending on conditions.
I do have a set of Rossy Axial 2 sitting in a box with only a week of use. I was thinking of selling them but now I'm not so sure...should I swap them over?

Probably not what you want to hear but might save you in injury.
I'm 75kg and completely destroyed a pair of Marker Squires skiing hard on them and doing freestyle. Got a full safety check in Intersport Glacier Saas Fee (great shop would recommend) a couple of years ago and they failed (as in really failed). I trust the shop so I binned the bindings (and skis because they were old and had been re drilled before).
I have been using rail mounted Gryphons since then without problems.
I would certainly say be careful with the safety performance of Squires and get them checked out regularly.
Stay safe

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Think the gripwalk thing is codswallop. All new GW compatible bindings should accept Alpine norm it's the other way round you need to worry about i.e. a GW sole in an older binding.
The Squires have a lot of plastic and the lighter Marker heel so that's why they tend not to be recommended for heavier or more aggressive skiers. They should however work for non aggressive pootling around after all DIN is DIN.

@Henwc, naw, they should be fine. I'm on my 3rd pair. Mind you I broke the first pair on the first day out

@under a new name, My pair looked fine but the tester in the shop was not convinced (he showed me graphs and things on the testing computer to convince me). Perhaps I should have looked for a second opinion, too late now though.

@Henwc, it’s certainly a valid thought to be concerned. I get mine from Concept in Chamonix and they’re pretty solid with the Marker reps but … still …

Yeah but you were doing freestyle! The OP sounds like a holiday skier not someone who stomps big jumps.

I should clarify that I was doing jumps and tricks but much more of the "small air" end of things

I should also add that my freestyle does give the bindings a good workout though, not stomping things, but more the skis flying off as I mess up another switch landing off an "M" or "S" kicker.

I've broken those bindings (90kg, aggressive, advanced/expert skier). I moved to metal Jesters and Look Pivots (which were very durable) but now use Tyrolia Attack Protectors, which come up on sale frequently at a lot less than Looks and Markers.
I like to land switch and do silly things, so given my weight need tougher bindings.
I don't generally run silly DINs, unless in the park (rare now, due to age) or properly off-piste (rare now due to lack of snow!). Daily setting is a 7, which causes me no problems.
My truly expert wife runs metal Look Pivots (she also runs sensible DINS), and swears by them.

I am indeed a holiday skier, 2 or 3 weeks a year most years and only pop off small lumps rather than actual freestyle jumps. Am pretty useless riding switch too.
I'm flying out for a week on Saturday so no time now and conditions look like it's not going to be a gnarly off piste type of week.
Are the Griffons any better and do they have the same drill pattern does anyone know, or should I just get my Axiums mounted when I come back?

@gixxerniknik, I had similar thoughts regarding Marker Squire vs Griffon on a new pair of skis last summer. I eventually settled on the Griffon because they are more durable and I'd rather not have any binding issues or breakages while I'm out.
I don't know about the drill pattern, but I saw this on the thread about mounting pattern overlays:

so I'd probably start there.
