 Poster: A snowHead
|
So 3 hours into a 3 week skip trip I have dislocated my shoulder and can no longer ski.
I am booked with Skisolutions to go to Le Portetta in Courchevel 1650 next week, half board. RRP £4800.
I am happy to pass that on with a huge discount if anyone is interested.
Please let me know and we can sort it out.
Trying to figure out how to add pictures for proof.

@Astontech, commiserations - a generous offer, but can you not get all your money back on insurance, less a small excess?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Possibly? Is that how it usually works?

One of the reasons for not delaying the taking out of ski insurance after booking your holiday, is to cover cancellation due to injury or illness. Definitely check the terms / conditions of your policy under cancellation....and I would expect it to be covered.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

So it looks like I only have cover up to £1000 so the offer is still open to anyone.
If not I will still attend but the preference is to pass it on.
Happy to FaceTime/call with anyone interested.

That's hugely unfortunate and I dont want to kick a man when he's down, but I'm not sure how you can have taken out a policy with cancellation cover for only up to £1000 when you've booked 3 weeks of skiing, one of which allegedly cost £4800 for a week of HB??
Also if you've only dislocated your shoulder, if its been popped back in, you should be able to ski no worries shirley? or have you not had it looked at to get popped back in?

@t44tomo, may have been advised not to by doctor? If so, insurance wouldn't pay out for any further injury.
Made me check my own cancellation cover with Nationwide FlexPlus, it's £5000.

Why so suspicious?!?!?! There are so many possibles in answer to your question. And ultimately both the answers and question are completely irrelevant to the thread as posted by Astontech.

Congratulations. That's one of the most ignorant comments I've ever read. So spectacularly ignorant I can't even be bothered to explain why.
I suggest you google "dislocated shoulder recovery time".

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

I dislocated my shoulder a dozen times before finally getting the surgery. Skiing is one of those activities that is probably no bueno for a fresh dislocation, unfortunately.
That said, of course there are plenty of people who pop their shoulders back in on the field of battle and get right back to business. But I'd probably declare myself hors de combat in this case.
@Je suis un Skieur, see above. One time I dislocated my shoulder, popped it back in, and continued playing tennis...now, in hindsight that was silly, I was 19, but it's possible...recently one of the top cyclo-cross racers did it on camera by bracing his arm on his bike frame and continuing on.
On the plus side, I had the surgery when I was 20 and I'm now 57 without further dislocations. I did, however, lose the ability to throw a ball and do yoga.

That kind of action is exactly why you ended up with a dozen dislocations and surgery.
You get one chance to rehabilitate a dislocated shoulder - the first time you do it. And the younger you are, the more likely it is to fail again unless really rehabilitated properly.
It's almost impossible to dislocate a shoulder without straining or tearing one or more of the rotator cuff tendons and most people will also have a torn and/or detached glenoid labrum. If it's detached you're probably stuffed anyway because it won't reattach on its own and you need surgery anyway but if it's just torn it might recover. If you don't give those enough time to heal and then very carefully build the strength and stability back into the joint, it will almost certainly fail again.
Movement patterns under rehabilitation need to be very carefully controlled and external abduction is a massive no-no so the mere act of holding a ski pole will almost certainly ensure that the joint never tightens up sufficiently to be stable and will fail again sooner or later.
I wouldn't advise someone with a first time dislocation to ski again for 3-6 months afterwards, no matter how well they think it's recovered.

 You know it makes sense.

@Je suis un Skieur, Interesting about the one chance to rehab it. I did my best but I was a teenager and doing teenage stuff so it kept coming out for years before I couldn't get it back in and surgery was advised...anyway, your assessment seems correct and as I said, skiing is probably out for the OP.
