Has anyone been caught out at TUI check-in by their strange ruling for bringing a larger wheelie ski bag, which states you can’t take any other checked baggage even though you paid £60 for ski carriage (23kg total weight)??
Or has anyone recently taken their padded wheelie ski/board bag as well as their suitcase without issue?
“You can use one of the larger wheelie bags by paying the £60 ski or snowboard carriage charge, with a checked baggage allowance of 23kg total. If you choose this option, you can't take any other checked baggage”

I think what they are saying is if you want to take a large ski wheelie bag with a weight of up to 23kg, you need to pay £60 extra because of the skis but this replaces the 23kg checked baggage automatically included for each passenger. In addition to the normal 23kg checked in baggage you still have the option to also book a ski bag up to 15kgs by paying £60. They also make it clear that the 15kg limit is for one set of skis in the bag only. I am going with Crystal at Easter and I had assumed that 2 sets of skis in one bag would be OK if the 15kg limit was not exceeded. Does anyone know if they actually check this?

 Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Probably best to ring Crystal and check -- the quoted sentence is a bit ambiguous.....

The quoted sentence is only one part of their section on ski carriage. When read in conjunction with the rest you can work it out, but the way they have worded it is not exactly plain english. But if in doubt as suggested give Crystal a call.

we've had no problem with 2 sets in the bag at 15kg (paid ski carriage) plus normal hold bag (20kg?) the cabin bag allowance is big enough to get boots etc in if you need it

@FrostyFish,
I've used a wheelie bag for several years without issue, using Crystalski.
It's been in addition to my normal allowance but strictly kept under 15kg.

..is a premium you're paying for the convenience of only taking one bag.

Crystal (and other TOs) have been doing the “only 1 set of skis per bag” thing for many a year, I recall them doing it when I first went on package tours around 1999 onwards. I took two pairs of skis a few times as did other friends, they never ever checked inside, just made sure that the weight was within the limit.
I think they do it as (a) it’s a way to try to get more money and (b) if the bag doesn’t turn up they’ll be liable for your kit hire / replacement and this way they’re only liable for one set per bag, unless you’ve paid double.

I’ve never had a problem with Crystal and no one’s checked, although last year the most miserable member of check in staff at LGW was pissy because she clocked we had two pairs of skis in the bag because of the weight. I just said that I knew we were only covered for one set and she let it go while scowling the whole time. Our insurance only covers for one set per bag but as the skis are both over five years old we wouldn’t get too much back if they were lost anyway.

I was also looking at this over the weekend as i was packing in readiness for a flight out on saturday and completely agree with Slippery Slope as to how this should be interpreted. It helps to look at in context of the whole paragraph:
"You can buy ski and snowboard carriage on the Flight Extras website. It's sold per set of skis or snowboard (not per bag) – one set of skis or one snowboard in one bag costs £60 and the maximum weight is 15kg. To take two sets of skis or two snowboards in one bag, you must buy two lots of ski or snowboard carriage at £60 each and the total maximum weight is 23kg."
I don't feel the need to double check with them, the wording could be clearer but is clear enough to me. The following also seems clumsily worded given that presumably as long as I remain under 15kg I should be able to put my boots in my ski bag:-
"Ski/snowboard boots aren’t included in ski or snowboard carriage – these are part of your normal baggage allowance and must be checked into the hold."
As it turns out I prefer to take my ski boots in my cabin bag which the T&Cs also make clear is allowed provided within the size and weight restrictions (which my messenger style boot bag is).
