Hi,
Having driven from the UK (London) quite a few times to the French Alps we usually stop at Djion for the night. This is far enough into the journey for day one and means that on day 2 we have 4 hours usually to complete the journey. This year we are going a little further to a new resort on the French/Italian border and was open to ideas around where to stop.

@slinkyhippo, where are you going to? We stopped in Macon last Saturday, and were in Serre Chevalier 3 hours and 20 minutes later.

@slinkyhippo, Beaune is a little but closer to your destination too.

We usually stop at Beaune or Dijon for La Rosiere. Then stop at Super U in Bourg st Maurice for fuel and food before heading up the mountain. We also once stopped at the mercure in Bourg en Bresse but we like the Beaune Novotel best.

When we get to Dijon we now always go via the A39 and A40 (rather than the A6, Lyon and Chambery) and then we go through Annecy to get to Albertville. We have stopped at Dole (amazing central town and birthplace of Louis Pasteur), Bresse and also Annecy. We have shopped at the Super U in Bourg St Maurice, but find the Leclerc at Aime more convenient and quieter.

Hi - Dole looks really nice - any recommendations for places to stay there?

We stop at Annecy and it's a really nice place - amazing views over the lake in the morning if it's cold and frosty.

Hotel La val Moret
Used to stop in Comfort Dijon but went down hill rapidly,
Can’t recommend La Val Moret enough

We stayed at the Ibis Dole Sud which is in Choisey. It was OK for one overnight and cheap, although you will need to drive into Dole centre a few kms away.

We're off to La Thuile in Feb half term. Stopping at the Ibis Budget Nuits St George. Stayed once before. Basic but secure. Next to a supermarket/fuel and lovely coffee/cake shop.

+1, been before, and will be there Thursday.

+1, stayed there before Christmas on our way to Switzerland (very nice to have a swim/sauna/hot tub after driving) - good food too!

@slinkyhippo, we often use the Dijon Holiday Inn Express going to/from Val d'Isere which is similar to La Rosiere. I think Dijon will still be fine.
Otherwise is you want to go a bit further (and want time to pick up some groceries in Bourg St Maurice) then we have also used the Ibis in Villefranche-sur-Saône.

We've just stayed in Best Western Quetigny in Dijon on the way back to the UK. Amazingly good. Was £10 dearer than Ibis but miles better.

Have a look at Logis de France if you want to avoid the chains. Lots of different hotels from charmant to 'traditional' French - which don't look as though they've been updated since before the war.
Franco-Prussian I mean. Though they're sadly harder to come by these days.

Val Moret is nice but not far enough through journey IMO
We have for last few years stopped at Ibis Macon Sud on way to Les Arcs, starting from Banbury. Yes the Friday is a long day in car, however it's a short hop the next morning and we can shop in valley and (often) be on the slopes Saturday afternoon

Val Moret is also quite a lot more expensive than some of the alternatives. I'd not stay there unless I was stopping early enough for a nice meal. Though it is mighty convenient for the motorway!

The McDonalds in Bourg was a key stop for our family drives to trips to Les Arcs, and La Roz.

I'm following this one, just for some fresh ideas.
Don't think a stop in Troyes and then 6-7hrs to L2A would cut it this time around so definitely trying to get down further.

@Specialman, I had to remind myself that we were only just over 40 when we started this drive down 20 years ago. We're just too tired at the sgtart of the holiday now to drive all day for two days starting at 5am. It's easier when days ar lighter but in January it feels like we see no daylight.

@Hells Bells, that's a good point. Often people are working/packing/preparing (simultaneously) until the very last minute.

We've stayed round Lyon the last couple of times, stay somewhere on the north bypass if you do, but it's a long first day - even longer if you get a tyre blow out... This time we're going to do the Ibis in Macon, as someone else mentioned above. Bit shorter on the first day but gets most of it done.

Our last drive down to Val D, we purposely did 2 stops each way as part of the holiday. We are 4 hours from the tunnel anyway. Lovely hotel in Ay, bit of champagne, and drinks in local bar. Then BSM the next day, meal in Bourg, then early drive up to catch first lifts on the Saturday. Back was via Annecy and a great hotel that was a Chateau near Bethune. All with time for nice meals in each, and not too much driving in one day.
Shall be doing to the same in Summer with a trip to bits of the South of France we've never been to, we like the driving and nosing around places, so a couple of stops each way, with a night in Perpignan in the middle.... this trip will have our dog with us as well...

Have also taken to stopping here both ways over the last couiple of years. Other option I've used a fair amount heading for Les Arcs is Ibis Budget Chateau Gaillard right by the motorway turnoff for Amberieu, before heading cross-country next morning to Chambery. Even more basic, but closer to destination on the way down.

I like the IBIS budget formula as it has the essential of your own bathroom - I don't require any other frills for a short overnight stop!

I'm staying in the Ibis in Chambery on the way down to La Plagne in a few weeks. There's a supermarket two minutes down the road from the hotel so will probably stop there in the morning as well.
It will be a long old slog on the Friday but with two drivers and a stop for lunch somewhere it should be doable. Hope to get up into the resort in time for breakfast and then ski from the car.
On the way back we're planning to ski all day on the Saturday and then drive up north to just south of Dijon to do then reach the tunnel for a mid afternoon crossing on the Sunday.
I'm used to doing it all in one go through the night so this should field like a luxury!
No idea how it will work to be honest as it's the first time doing it this way for me but will report back.
