Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

La Plagne help please

 Poster: A snowHead

Booking a last minute trip for 3 of us guys.
The options are at 1450 Les Coches or 1800. Is there any preferred area from these two? From what I can see, 1450 has better skiing access, 1800 has slightly more bars/restaraunts?

As we’re in our 30’s we would like the option for a few beers in the evenings, is there many bars around or easy access to other nearby villages via bus or taxi?

Going March 19th.

Thank you

IMHO Les Coches maybe a bit low for a mid-March ski trip. It doesn't take too long to get from central La Plagne to the Vanoise Express/that corner of the system - so I'd go for the 1800 La Plagne option

Can't help with the bus info

1800 - La Plagne only proper night club in the area, plus a few bars and and a couple of very good restaurants, lifts or free bus in and out easy access to other Villages (there are 12 ) Easy access to Montalbert for skiing in the trees if light is bad (and another load of restaurants) if its sunny easy access to the altitude areas and over to Les Arcs if you must!

I'm in Les Coches now. It's a very, very quiet dormitory. One bar, a few restaurants. There's not much true ski in/out and access to the larger area is a minimum three lift haul. Access to Vanoise is obviously excellent.

Can't comment upon 1800, but Sunweb has a very good deal for Les Coches snowHead

I’ve stayed in 1800 and if I went back I’d stay in les coches - I did not like the nonsense that was bellecote over Xmas week and the queues and bottleneck that area provided which we seemed to have to endure every day. I feel like it’s towards one end of a vast ski area. Quite difficult / onerous to get to les arcs from 1800 IMO. Les coches is more central for exploring the whole area I think. Though altitude could be an issue I suppose.

I was in Les Arcs last year mid March and it was so mild there was barely an overnight refreeze and very heavy conditions on the lower runs, so I think Plagne 1800 would be better than Les Coches but I would stay higher up if possible eg Plagne centre or Belle Plagne. Obviously the same week could be significantly colder this year but I still think Les Coches is a poor place to stay unless you are wanting to divide your time equally between Les arcs and la plagne.

I am a bit of a Les Coches buff having been there a dozen times aswell as several other trips to La Plagne/Les Arcs.

The two biggest plusses to me are the trees (especially useful in deep winter, less so on March 19th) and it's proximity to the VE, meaning you can swing one or another very easily.

There are other reasons I like it:

Access is pretty easy - 15 drive up from the N90 - with plenty of good roadside parking.
Because of it's proximity to the VE and that people returning from Les Arcs to La Plagne have to ski into Les Coches the link runs are well cannoned and prepared. So there is never any issue going to or from.
It's a fairly quiet satellite ski station (as alluded to above) which suits us.
I like the skiing in the immediate vicinity - both pistes and off piste.
Just to be clear most of the accommodation is ski in ski out but yes to get to the main La Plagne skiing area is 3 lifts. But to get to the VE it's 1 so you know.

I don't know 1800 well but yes, it wouldn't take much to have more bars/restaurants than Les Coches. And it will be more convenient if you want to or happy to spend most of your time in La Plagne.

It depends on what you want to do. Les Coches is perfect if you want to divide your time between Les Plagnes and Les Arcs, and as @Layne says they are motivated to maintain the pistes. But if your focus is just on skiing La Plagne then Les Coches is a bit of a pain, better to stay at 1800 with easy access to all the area.

You can get beer anywhere (at least, any ski resort I've been) but if you want a pub crawl perhaps Les Coches might be a disappointment.
