 Poster: A snowHead
|
Hello,
We will be spending a few days in the Aosta Valley, mainly with the idea of skiing in Cervinia and Monte Rosa. One day, we want to get to La Thuile, but since it's the resort that is farthest for us and we will only go for one day, we want to make the most of that day. The question is whether La Thuile is one of those resorts in the Alps where there are fewer people on the slopes on Saturdays (since visitors usually make week-long trips), or if Saturdays are among the busiest days because of local skiers (French or Italians from the area).
Thank you!

It depends a lot on the weather in the region. If it is generally good elsewhere, then Saturday tends to be quiet. However, if neighbouring areas are short of snow, they bus visitors in; also independent travellers go to where the snow is.
I have a photo (which I failed to attach) which shows 15 coaches at 09:00 on a Saturday in March in a coach park that is normally deserted.

La Thuile is furthest for N Italy city dwellers (courmayeur being further up the valley but doesn't have the mountain climb road that La Thuile has) so I'd say best chance of being quiet. Been to all the Aosta valley resorts in feb half time a few times and all feel relatively quiet. Maybe not Pila on a Saterday was the only one. But as above if the city types decide to travel and word spreads about good conditions that could change I guess...

Great area though so don't miss it.... make sure you go over the back...... I call it 'no man's land' in between LT and LR. There a cracking restaurant over there on the pass.... well worth it

Thank you very much for the response. The idea would be to go on Saturday, January 18. I understand that there are currently good snow conditions in all the resorts in the area.
On Sunday and Monday, we will visit Cervinia/Zermatt, and on Tuesday, Monterosa.

The La Thuile end of the valley is currently getting more snow than Monterosa end. That said my daughter was in Monterosa just before xmas and conditions were good despite quite thin snow cover. Arguably La Thuile least effected by weekend skiers from milan / turin due to extra distance. 18th Jan is very much off peak so Monday and Tuesday will be very quiet everywhere.
Watch the weather forecast carefully. If as expected is sunny and still, then everywhere will be fine. If its windy the Cervinia / Zermatt link is vulnerable to closing. The valley links in Monterosa and the link between La Thuile and La Rosiere are also vulnerable to this, but probably less so that Cer-Zer. All of these places are not good to be in the wrong valley if the lifts close
In poor weather Pila is best bet of the bigger resorts as more sheltered and mainly tree-lined slopes.
