Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Private lessons in Corvara, Feb half term?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hello All

I may have left it too late, but...

I am trying to organise 3 morning private lessons for my 2 sons in Corvara at Feb half term. So far I'mn drawing a blank at the Corvara ski school, as well as the SkiBro, Maisonsport and checkyeti websites (though waiting to hear on a couple of lukewarm leads).

Does anyone have any suggestions?

One thought was that Corvara might be the issue. If I went for a resort that's easily accessible by lift / ski from Corvara maybe I cd increase muy chances..? Which raises the question - which are the resorts within 30 mins ski / lift from Corvara?

Help always gratefully received!

Colfosco is nearly next door - then La villa or San Cassiano would be using the same ski area as Corvara

Interesting we've never had problems so I hope its not a shortage, were Corvara ski school slow to respond or have they said no? have you tried the lesson slot 8:30-10.00 am? they obviously have more instructors available then as group lessons start at 10:00.

You could try the ski schools at La Villa as it's a short ski over to meet at the top of the Gran Risa gondola (they have a meeting point there and also in La Villa).

I've used Ski and Snowboard school Dolomites twice. Great instructors both times. Take Col Alt Gondola from Corvara, stay left for Braia Fraida Chairlift. Take Piste 15, stay left on the first pitch and turn left onto the track through the forest (probably signposted Bamby). When you reach chairlifts, the one on the left is Bamby and takes you to the top of Piz La Ila (where the gondola from La Villa finishes) and the one on the right is La Fraina, which takes you to the top of Piz Sorega (where the gondola from San Cassiano finishes). The ski school meeting points are at the top of the gondolas. Colfosco is just a flat gondola away (Borest), no skiing at all.

@what...snow - thanks v much for that, very helpful. Quick question - how long do you think it would take to get to the top of the Pia La Ila and Piz Sorega gondolas from Col Alt, assuming moderate ski speed , and a 9/9:30 am meeting time and Feb half term levels of busy-ness?

@richb67, @what...snow, Stop press! CheckYeti came back to me in the end with something from the La Villa ski school. meeting point is in La Villa (bottom of Doninz chairlift).....; sorry to drag this out, but...to ski there from Corvara is not 100% obvious to me from the piste map...I'm hoping it's nice and quick as it's so close

I'd say its probably 30-40 minutes. Start with the directions @what...snow gave. "Col Alt Gondola from Corvara, stay left for Braia Fraida Chairlift. Take Piste 15, stay left on the first pitch and turn left onto the track through the forest (probably signposted Bamby). When you reach chairlifts,"... continue across between the two chairlifts and down 24 Skiweg Bamby which takes you to La Villa, then you take two short chairlifts (La Rua and Colz) to the other side of La VIlla and then it's a short ski down to the bottom of the Doninz chairlift.

@AllonsY, What time is the meeting? If it is at 9:00am it might be tight you will need to get first lift up the col alt. Are they private lessons? If so you could ask to meet at the top of the Grand Risa .

This might be better described as start going down Piste 14, then take 15A through the forest halfway down.

Looking at the website it might be possible to take the bus its much closer by road than by ski and is only 10 minutes bus trip, you can ski back.

The bottom of Donitz is their main meeting for groups etc. It may be that they want to meet there for the first lesson to evaluate the level. It's a nice wide blue slope and it'll be quieter over there. When I used them and we met there the instructor would stay in La Villa, go over to Badia and up to La Crusc which is a lovely run out with good wide consistent pistes and relatively few people.

the bus runs pretty often and takes contactless.

If Corvara get back to you no doubt you can cancel as evidently they're now owned by the same guy.

The other option for private lessons in Corvara could be to get some in the afternoon. They always have a lot more availability as people seem to generally prefer morning lessons and a lot of the instructors are doing the group lessons in the morning.

@olderscot, that sounds right. I knew that run changed numbers, 15 itself is from the top of La Brancia/Roby. Doing this from memory of being there in 2018 and 2022. The app is useless at showing the runs in this area, it doesn’t show 14, connecting the top and bottom of La Brancia via the top of Braia Fraida, at all.

My kids first lesson in 2022 was above Doninz. We had a great lunch before it at a restaurant just above the top of Doninz. For the rest of the week the instructor picked them up from the hotel and took them to San Cassiano. I picked them up from the top of Sorega. It was the last week of the season, there was only the 2 of them having lessons in La Villa. The first lesson (evaluation really) was in the afternoon, then mornings and the last 2 days are all day (Thursday is usually race day and Friday the big trip). Think they did the same pattern in 2018, which was half term.

Skiweg Bamby is very flat, then it runs into the lower section of the red run. The black goes to a different spot and finishes at an almost elevator-style lift up to the gondola. The red ends at the short chairlift that goes to the other end of the car park.

If you’ve plenty of time, you can take piste 20 from Braia Fraida to Pre dai Corf lift. The view is excellent from this lift (possibly the best view from a lift) and it will take you to Piste 17 (Altin) so you can avoid poling along the skiweg (Bamby lift does the same but no great view). You would all have to be good enough for a decently long red on your first morning though.

This all so helpful - thanks very much , guys. Quite a few variables to consider there. And now - thanks to that detail - I can make better sense of the piste map.

I'm hopefully going to sort this over the course the day.

How did you get on booking lessons? The ski school in Corvara is fantastic and has lots of lovely instructors. There is a particular instructor my wife likes but we left it too late this year so she’s having someone else.

@IainMcT, I’m in Corvara week of the 8th Feb, and also looking to get some private lessons (with Corvara ski school being the best looking option at the moment). Would you mind sharing your recommendation?

@IainMcT, In the end I went for La Villa Ski school ( 3 x pm lessons), meeting at Piz La Ila so we can ski back to Corvara easily after the end of the lesson. Both Corvara and San Cassiano had slots in the pm too, but Corvara only had 2 hour rather than 3 hour slots and San Cassiano seemed a tiny bit more of a faff / less well connected than La Villa, but it's probably much of a muchness. Thanks again everybody, much appreciated...
