Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@v1cky24, do it, in whatever capacity makes you comfortable and I think just posting this thread demonstrates your courage Smile

I am going to look up Skigodess as well. I share your urgency. My partner doesn't ski and I used to go on additional trips with my Dad, but he is no longer able to join me and as a 52-year old woman, I am firmly in the "make hay" camp, and as I don't have friends that ski, I have taken solo trips. However this year I am going on my first Snowheads bash (the pre birthday one in Alleghe 25th Jan), as it's the smallest one.

I have built up my confidence since 2018 and this season I have stayed in Zermatt pre Christmas (solo), the Italy bash, and going to Utah for 2 weeks in March on my own (although know Utah well from previous trips). So I think there's a few options for you: do you want a couple of shorter trips as week-long sounds unviable? Do you need others to ski with or just travel/stay with to reduce costs or both? The solo forum usually has offers going as well. I will also send you a message as although this season is a bit full already, maybe there is something we can arrange?

@AliAfro, I’ve also been toying with this kind of option as I want to get a few days of skiing mid Feb leaving either on the eve of 6th of Feb or 13th of Feb and coming back either on the Sunday eve or the Monday eve with a strong preference for City Airport or Gatwick to Geneva (im based in Upper Norwood) This will be subject to costs / securing a solo room at reasonable rates. I’m early 50s, strong(‘ish) intermediate. If you want to swap some ideas get in touch.Whilst a solo room is a pre requisite for me it would be good to travel / ski with someone in resort.

@v1cky24, it's been a long while for me, but I did a snowheads EoSB (too) many years ago when I was solo skiing and had an absolute blast, I was well out of my comfort zone but it was just so laid back and with so many groups doing different things, it was easy to find people who you gelled with. Met some excellent people, had a blast out on my skis and in the restaurants afterwards. Ended up living with someone I met on here for a season in Tignes and another SH got an apartment in our building and we spent most of a season together. I still ski 'solo' but tag on with a group of skiers my brother introduced me to. I'm hoping to get on another bash in 2026.

@Snowmadmum, I hope you have a lovely time! I’ve been looking at flights etc to see if I can make anything work. It might be ‘no possible’ this time for me but I am a determined sort!

@Mr Blue Sky - Ah I would have been keen but I'm away for most of Feb... (and I'm in Brockley so also keen on LCY).

FYI From my research:

There is a late flight back to London City on a Sunday, but on a Monday you are limited to Luton / Gatwick / Heathrow if you want to ski all day as the single available LCY flight goes at 13:25.

Also Weekend accom options are much harder to find (and more expensive) during french school holidays /UK half term week: https://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=167136.

www.skiweekends.com have a good if you want a catered chalet Thur - Monday.
www.heidi.com and www.Weski.co.uk are handy if you want someone to put together flights/accom/transfers.
www.booking.com and www.vrbo.com are good if you want to DIY and save a few pounds.
Sunweb sometimes has deals including passes but not always cheaper than DIY (and sunweb assumes you wont be skiing on the last day so you have to add that pass day in as an extra..).

@abc, good for you! Great you don’t see lack of company/ have the confidence to talk to people. We’re not all wired that way Smile

I’m not exactly a shy bairn but booking to go on a trip with strangers/alone is not something I’m used to doing or fully comfortable with . You’re right though- there are more reasons on the ‘do it’ list rather than the ‘don’t do it’ list

@v1cky24, I wasn’t “wired” that way either. But I was “trained” to be outgoing, with a purpose, because I was “too shy” as a youngster.

Sometimes, circumstance makes it necessary to change one’s “default” behavior or comfort level. You may find it’s not as hard as you’d feared.

Today is a busy day at the resort. Here in Japan, strangers don’t seem to share a double chair, which makes for much longer lift lines. And a long and lonely chair ride too. So I turned around and see who’s behind me. If it’s a lone skier, I invite him/her to join me on the double chair. Turns out, I shared chairs with several locals! (Seems visitors all paired up, or wish to ride alone?). That was great. They gave me tips on where the best snow is. Once, I was in a gondola with two other gentlemen. The silence was a bit depressing. So I got the ball rolling by saying “nice day, isn’t it?”. Well, that got them talking freely. It was an enjoyable 10 minute ride.

@v1cky24, Have you thought about Scotland for a weekend? Depending on where you are in the North East you'll be about a 5-6 hour drive from the slopes.

You mentioned a camper van which sounds ideal for a weekend trip to Scotland because you could be flexible about doing it a bit last minute to find ok conditions. I couldn't tell if this is an option or not for you though.

@Henwc, I spend a bit of time in Scotland. Someone put me off skiing there though a long time ago. Laughing Maybe I should revisit. Though I live in Teesside so typically 7 hours drive!

Sorry the 5-6 hour figure came from google maps from Newcastle so I must have missed off the first hour or so of your journey Smile

I'd have thought with a bit of planning you could jump in a camper van on a Friday after work and see how far you get before stopping for the night. You could then choose the resort that looked the best option before completing the journey the following morning. There's probably a natural stopping point somewhere where the routes to the various resorts split off.

I have never skied there before but form what others say the key for Scotland seems to be doing everything last minute so you can get the best conditions.

I have the kind of life where I need to plan a ski trip 6 months in advance, so it does't really suit me but might work for you.

Another option is to look into joining a group ski touring weekend in Scotland, that way you have a bit more flexibility and it would include a social element. A google search for "ski touring scotland" brings up some decent looking options for guided courses. I'm getting tempted myself!
