Has anyone flown with Swiss Airlines. I read somewhere that because it's free of charge for ski carriage, where they say one pair of skis only, they mean it, as in they search bags to check that no other items are packed in there. I was planning on packing a few other bits of clothing, thermals, gloves etc - Anyone done this and it was fine?

A sole return trip to Geneva ex LHR a few years ago, ski bag not opened only weighed. The weight would have clearly told anyone who knew or cared that there was more than one pair in there.

All hold bags _WILL_ be scanned for things like Li batteries etc as a matter of course but they're not interested in items of clothing etc

Only risk is if the bag gets lost they will only re-imburse you for the one pair of skis you should have had in it. And not your Nazi gold.

@katie28, Flown with them 6 times in the past 2 years....bags never searched, just tagged and then you drop them off to oversize.
This was in Dublin and Zurich.

In theory all airlines have the same type of policy when it comes to ski carriage only being one pair, I've been asked a few times but never been searched and never had a problem when I've said there's more than one pair. Certainly never an issue if there's other ski related items in there. YMMV if it's through a tour operator, although I'm not sure if Swiss end up on those lists.
Also I think the "free ski carriage" thing is a bit of a misnomer as you're still paying for it, it's just airlines have a different approach to how they charge for luggage.

Given the rough treatment by the ground staff, clothing around skis is padding to protect the skis and bindings from handling abuse.

You’ll have a luggage allowance if you’re taking skis. If you’re worried then just shove them in the main bag and enjoy less stress.

Somewhat on this point, when Swiss Air says skis free of charge would this also apply to boots and helmets? When I fly for skiing, we always bring our boots/helmet then rent skis at the resort. We have Thule ski boot bags for the helmet and boots. Would this count as ski equipment for purposes of the free check in? For our recent trip to Zermatt from NY it was free, but under a different rule. As is usually the case, they offered to check overhead bin bags for free, and the check in counter always deems these to be overhead bin-ish, although in practice I would have a hard time fitting them in. So when checking in our traditional luggage, we got the boot bags checked for free as overhead bin bags.

Just look at the website - Ski equipment includes one pair of skis, one pair of ski boots, one pair of ski poles and a helmet. This equipment can be transported in two bags. Snowboard equipment includes one bag containing a snowboard and one bag containing one pair of snowboard boots and a helmet. The equipment must not exceed a maximum length of two metres.

@wjrlaw, and its “Swiss” now, Swiss Air or Swissair went bankrupt in 2002 so don’t book with them.

Swiss flown many times and never had skis checked. Boots and helmets can go in a seperate bag. We always take our own boot/helmets bags and stick both our skis in together with poles, jackets and salopettes and towels. Flown from all the major Swiss airports and from Heathrow and nobody has betted an eyelid as long as underweight. Sometimes we take the boots as the hand luggage bag on the way out (to make sure we definitely have them, I have awkward feet), but always check it in on the way back as ski equipment.

A 23kg ski bag is cheaper on Easyjet than a 23kg suitcase. Just saying…
And ski bags never weigh properly on the scales as they’re always supported elsewhere. I was surprised my bag on the way home was only 18kg. Turned out to be 28kg on the bathroom scales.

I've had stickers on my ski bags to say that they have been opened and examined, but that isn't by greedy airlines

Yes and no. The bag conveyor at LHR T5 was indeed too short for our bag where it “weighed” 17kg. At Milan MXP the weighing section was long enough to weigh it properly where it was 22.5kg. I wasn’t too worried either way as I know the former situation happens quite often but had weighed the bag myself so pretty much knew it was under the limit shoild the latter situation arise anywhere.

SWISS are my airline of choice and are definitely the skier's friend when it comes to ski and boot carriage. Never been checked in more than 15 years of regular flying with them. As said previously, weighed, tagged and dropped off at the outsize luggage belt at Heathrow; weighed, tagged and handed to gentleman in the pink high-vis at Zurich and Geneva. Always, always pad out the bag with clothing etc especially on the way home with dirty kit!

I've never heard of any airlines searching hold bags. All they are concerned about is whether the weight and dimensions are within the booked allowance.
Any bag searches are carried out by the airport security, and what they are bothered about is any potentially dangerous items, not how many pairs of skis, underpants etc are in the bag.
