Was it Armaggedon at ports and the Tunnel due to the new procedures; or was it a nothingburger? Asking for a friend travelling next week

I thought the "new procedures" had not kicked in yet? On the way out and back at Christmas we just showed our passports to an actual person (actually very pleasant and friendly in all cases) in a booth.

Following email reply just received from below
Thank you for contacting the Europe Direct Contact Centre.
It is important to note that there currently is no official start date for the Entry/Exit System (EES). The European Commission has proposed to introduce a progressive start of operations of the EES. This proposal now needs to be adopted.
For further information about the EES, please see: https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ees_en
Below is from EU website
The change in a nutshell
ETIAS will start to be operational in mid-2025, according to the action plan endorsed by the ministers of EU countries in October 2023.
The launch of ETIAS will take place a few months after the introduction of the Entry Exit System (the EES). The EES will require identity, travel document data and biometric checks for non-EU travellers entering the territory of these European countries for a short stay. Biometric data will not be collected with ETIAS.

Seemed to be many more care on the road this year - especially on 27th with folks leaving on the day off after Boxing Day Thursday. Heavy fog dis not help. Heavy rain this weekend did not help.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

@Charliegolf, no new checks that we had on Saturday apart from had to show passport to two different UK Windows (no idea why, don't remember that happening before). Added at least 4 seconds and then they let us skip the security check.
LOTS of new terminals for the EES stuff though (50-60 parking spaces with two terminals per space by the looks of it). Everything turned on when we went past but the shed it's in was closed.
Looks like you'll pull up, get out and scan your passport on an e-Gate machine like you get at the airport, do some stuff on they then be authorised.
So that's definitely going to add time to the process and feels like it'll be a nightmare at busy times.

Doesn't the EU have a massive issue with implementing this at all Schengen borders, getting software to co-operate across lots of member states, and putting it all in place at the same time? They seemingly can't trial it because it needs to operate at all the borders, not just a select few.

For it to be fully implemented, it needs to be everywhere. They could start using the system as a trial if they wanted but they'd need to keep all the manual stuff as well anyway until everyone is switched over.
Would make sense to trial it at different size and types of every point to iron out the kinks that'll obviously be there (whether that's operational or technological)
